Now that the body lift is on (1") my next project will be rock rails. I was thinking of using 1/4 or 5/16 angle iron 4 or 5 inches high. Using ice dam material along the back of it where it contacts the side of the jeep. I do not want to bolt it through the side of the jeep so what would be the best/strongest way to attach it to the frame keeping removeability and ground clearance in mind? Input would be appreciated.

If you don't want to bolt through the body, I'd just go with 2x4 square tubing. Welded to the frame with a few stringers. You're not going to loose any ground clearance because your frame rails will still be lower, but if you want to remove it you're stuck with cutting it off. Not really a bad idea, cause anything removable (ie with lynch pins) will rattle after a while, and really, how many times are you going to want to remove them?
Also, anything like angle iron that close to the body will collect mud/moisture and bring on the rusties... no matter how much ice dam you use.

As always Bill good points to ponder over. One would think this would be easy but it is my addiction. So I will go sit in the garage with a beer and look it over some more.

Little do you know Wade but I did look at yours last night before we took your top off. I like the angle iron look/function/clearance but I just can't bring myself to drilling/bolting through the tub.

Bill and all others what if I leave a space between the side of the body and the side of the angle iron? say 1/8 or 1/4 inch. No moisture/rust problem then? I don't mind welding it to the frame - like you said Bill how often will I remove them anyways.

For my rock rails, I took some 2x4x3/16 tubing, cut it on opposite corners so I had 2 pieces of 2x4 angle with rounded edges and a nice radius on the corner. It didn't bother me at all to bolt it to the body on mine.

Well if Wobblie was involved then I will make the obvious conclusion....had nothing to do with the top of the Jeep...lol.

Thanks Alan. I'm still pondering - if I procrastinate long enough I will dent up the body then it will be easier to drill/bolt through it. ;D

You must have a nicely equipped shop Alan. Did you put any stringers on the bottom of them to attach them underneath or just bolt them through the body?

Still procrastinating. But I did notice that I haven't tied my rear tow points into the frame yet.
