Looks nice! MIG welded aluminum? Paul It's tig welded, I didn't think my welds looked bad enough to be mistaken for mig! It was new aluminum, and I cleaned where I was going to weld, but still had trouble with contamination. My tig will clean as you weld, but makes it hard to have continuous pretty welds. Strong is more important than pretty though.

I'm no master tig'r on aluminum, much harder to do than steel. And its too expensive to practice much. What alloy is it? Do you have a dedicated set of Al only cleaning tools? Have you got a balance controlable squarewave machine? Using pure tungsten or a fancy ceriated or something? Don't mind me, just trying to pick your brain a bit. Paul

I've got a Lincoln Squarewave 175. It uses a 3/32 2% thoriated tungston electrode for all welding. The aluminum was 6061 T651, and yes I have cleaning tools just for al. It wasn't bad, just enough to be a bit of a pain.

Try a pure tungsten or a 2% ceriated electrode. Thoriated tungstens don't work well on AC because the tip deteriates during the cleaning half of the cycle and can contaminate the weld. Did you notice any arc wondering?
