Seems like it would be an obvious match. Anyone a member? What's involved in becoming a volunteer?

Depending which area/group you join, many hours a week volunteering, raising money, working on vehicles. I was a member for 5 years, and was on probation for a lot of it. Seems having a job got in the way of volunteering, and if you miss meetings you go on probation. The RCMP/DNR make all the search decisions, so you may spend the night on the bus, doing nothing. I like knowing the S&R are always there to help, but it's heavily weighed with politics. (Overmanaged) Most of the members in my area were seasonal workers, people off work with disabilities or retired, which made them very available.

ps Forgot to say, extensive map/compass training, which may be worth joining just for the training.

For those who like flying, there is the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, or CASARA at www.casara.ca/ They need spotters for their aircraft, and sometimes in the DND Herc's.
