Doesn't really matter to me what we go with as a name for this "group" - though i am kinda partial to sticking with the SWAT letters if possible. When I get back I'll rework the previous version with Assistance and see how it comes out. Dave - Pad - thanks guys - glad for the help! Mark, Rob - I was thinking of you two today... Thanks for coming on board!

We're in too! Finally! A LEGITIMATE reason for going out in the snow - although the Tim Horton runs were very very necessary!! AND, if you need any help with this, let me know.

ok i did not say EMO did not take over, it TAKES time for EMO to take over 8-12 hours, and i don't want to take away from the club's members ability to handle them selfs on or off road. I think that this is a great idea, in fact i think it should be expanded some, to help local fire and EHS in other ways all so, the machines that we drive r very able to go places, the FD im with covers a large area of wilderness(wentworth/folly), EMS does not have offroad ability, our 4x4 is over loaded, so this could be also used to get to lost and hurt hikers, snowmobilers, and atv drivers

So who would actually do the call out? Would EMO have a list of where everyone is located and their phone numbers, and just call the next available S.W.A.T. person closest? Or would we all hit the road and activly look for those who need assistance? Or a little of both? Is there a minimum vehicle requirement? (32+" tires maby, I dunno) All questions that should be answered.

In N.S Social Services are the one mandated to take the lead in disasters. That said they have no resourses or man power etc to do the job. Red Cross steps in along with the Company I work with Saint John Ambulance. thier volunteers help out where needed. Red Cross has thier own disaster teams across the Province. SJA has a local birgade in Waterville and of course Dartmouth is the main office for SJA. I have a friend who was the head of EMO and as of lately has been the county member at large. Joe can provide a lot of information. I've been to a lot of Provincial meetings for EMO.
I know the hospitals have thier own policies for moving personel. It's a fantastic idea and certainly one I'm keen to help out with. Just like wheeling, Rigs would need to go out in groups of two as the people you are often transporting MUST report to duty. That should not be a problem. Under staffed hospitals are a major concern during disasters. During 911 we spent a few hundred hours moving from shelter to shelter and it would have been almost imposible if the weather was bad. What a great way to help the medical personel, shelter volunteers as well as persons requiriing basic transportation.
There are some issues with public transport but a lot of these fall to the side if we are a required service by EMO. Having a disaster declared opens the door to all kinds of ways around the standard laws of the land.

Would be a good idea to send people out in pairs, from the same area. Always better to travel in pairs in that kind of weather. Maybe divide up the town into areas, know which members are in those areas, call them first. Buddy system!

Or would we all hit the road and activly look for those who need assistance? Or a little of both? Is there a minimum vehicle requirement? (32+" tires maby, I dunno) All questions that should be answered. As of right now, referencing the resourses I'm working with, I'd be doing the call outs locally. I'd need other folks scattered around the various areas to help coordinate this, though. The folks at CDHA, for example, have one person who handles their needs from their end. We'd need to have one person at our end to make the communications clear and quick. As for the idea of minimums of 2's on call-outs - exactly what was originally planned. Hadn't thought of minimum requirements for the trucks themselves, but since I've seen plenty of stock Jeeps go places other vehicles couldn't, I'd support anyone who wnats to help with a Jeep being able to (with insurance, reg, etc. in place, obviously). If you, the volunteer, felt your rig/skills/confidence weren't up to the challenge on the call-out, it'd be your responsibility to speak up. Our goal it to help out, not get ourselves stuck all around the province...LOL That said, I suspect this wouldn't be much of a concern - many times when we have storms and things start getting shut down, the roads are closed, etc., pretty much any 4WD vehicle with good tires and a decent drive can cope...just to be sure though, I'm going to lift my Comanche 4.5 inches...LOL, but I'll still be riding on 31's. Kevin - glad your back - drop me a line if you have any questions about the stuff I'm into up here. As soon as I get the meeting done with CDHA this Friday, I'll post up a plan of execution for review. Since everyone is volunteering for this, the plan will automatically be open for input and revision, but it should get us started on the basics of a set of SWAT guidelines. After that, I'll suggest we start looking into the other groups mentioned thoughtout this thread. Ideally I'd love to hook up with one group - juggling 3 or 4 groups during a crisis/storm will get cumbersome. I don't think that'll happen, though, enless we end up in a true state of emergency working with someone like EMO. ...oh yeah, I'm home... UPDATE - we have 35 Jeeps committed to help so far. I'm hoping for a few more form the Valley as the word spreads and I get more details in place. A couple folks have posted ideas, etc, but I have not included them in this count, as they did not specifically state they would volunteer - so the list stands at 35 volunteers - I think that's outstanding!
