Bill - wasn't sure whether to GD this one or Off-Topic it - feel free to move if you feel the need.
For the record - I am willing to lead the organization of this effort and the management of it with input form others. basically, I'm happy to put my time & effort into this one gang.
OK, so I chatted with EMO today - The Emergency Measures Organization. They cover NS in three zones - Western, Central & Northern.
I am expecting a call back from their Executive Director hopefully before Saturday.
The gal I chatted with suggested this is the kind support they enjoy having - equipped, trained, professional folks willing to help out. Since we are equipped, trained and willing to help, this should be a natural fit. - BTW, she knew of the Hummer & $1000 from last winter and thought it was unsavoury...
At this point, I need to get togther an idea of who's on board - who's willing to help out with this. I'm happy to organize it (had some offers to help already which I will be taking up shortly).
As I see it, we'd basically end up on call for EMO, Ground Search & Rescue, any hospitals in areas we can cover which may want our numbers, police, etc.
My personal intention will be to be ready to go whenever my phone rings - doesn't matter the time of day, if the weather's that bad that someone needs us to get to a destination, my personal goal is to never say no. I intend to take this seriously.
That said, who wants in.
I've got calls into a couple of hospitals, too. Inevitably this could be quite big - because we can literally cover Nova Scotia, as we have members in a number of places, we could potentially offer this ability anywhere. First and foremost, though, I'm going to concentrate on Metro - if the Valley dudes want to get someone cracking on this at their end to call hospitals, etc., that'd be great. I'd be happyt o share whatever knowledge I can. It just seems to make sense someone local would take care of that area.
EMO will handle all of NS through their regions, but they don't deal with the hospitals, etc.
The gal I chatted with used to work for police dispatch and she said they sometimes get dozens of calls during weather emergencies from doctors and surgeons who've been called into a hospital, but have no way to get there.
If I can get a show of hands on the board here, that'd help me with my presentation to these foks. It'd be great to be able to say we have 15 Jeeps ready to go when the weather turns or someone is lost in the woods.
For the record, I have approached them as a part of a group of Jeep owners willing to help. I wanted to get this ball rolling. Obviously I'd encourage the Exec to take a look at this and determine whether the Club will officially be involved - I suspect it's a yes, but I won't speak on behalf of the Exec.
...as for insurance - I spoke with my company and the word form my underwriter is this:
No different than offering to drive your neighbor somewhere - follow the rules of the road, only as many passangers as seat belts - meets those requirements and you're fine. If anyone is skeptical, I urge you to check with your own insurance agent and underwriter.
I for one am totally in.
