It took me about 5 tries to figure out what you were asking, towing in forward, 4 low is the preferred way, driveline is stronger in forward and control is better. Tow points front and rear are necessary. Lots of stuff gets broken with improper tow points.
Wait till Len gets here...

lot of truck have lower gear in reverse and you can count on the weight of the engine in the front when you tow backward, however every situations different.

The dana 30 front axle does not like when a hard pull is done backwards. It is not designed for that. I broke both front axle shafts trying to pull someone out in reverse. If it is a easy pull then try it from the front. If it a very hard pull turn around and pull from behind.

i fawking hate pulling people with my front hooks. it breaks the D30 axles for a joke.
anything that requires a running start or wheelspin - pull from your rear towpoint if at all possible.

I tow from both but RARELY from the front. Almost always from the back. Having said that, I towed TDog and Scott the other night in the snow from the front, TDog required a little snap, but Scott was a slow, steady, controlled pull. It comes down to a question of experience, the situation and who you are pulling out.
One is pretty well always better off pulling from the rear tow points, especially if you have little or no recovery experience as this setup is more forgiving of errors.
You can make much harder recoveries towing from the back that from the front, and you have more control.

Hey Pierce, you were there when I had to pull Tdog off the busted bridge on Myra Rd. We pulled his rear springs right off the frame hanger. So it's not just if you want to help. It's just as important if you need help .A lot of times you need to get pulled out of where you shouldn't have gone in the first place(no offense dog). So, yes you should have at least one rear tow point.
