I've been told rear break shoes are a total PITA, but I'm trying to take all the advice everyone gives me and do some more work myself. Is anyone interested in helping me do some rear break shoes, so I can take one more item off my list at APJ's on Monday? It doesn't ahve to be before monday though. It looks like I am doing lube oil filter and front and rear diff on thursday with a friend, so thats some money in my pocket. I am thinking of using some of the saved cash and invest in a cleanable air filter, to avoid the cost of new ones every few months. Any recomondations?

I have absolutely no spare time between now and Monday... Is this for a safety inspection? You're in north end Hali, right? Rear brakes can be a pain in the ass if you've never done them before. Some brake specific tools are handy Couple tools I find handy are.. www.lislecorp.com/tool_detail.cfm?detail=883and www.lislecorp.com/tool_detail.cfm?detail=939Save you aggrivation and knuckle bark. Both are cheap and available at Princess Auto. They're by no means mandatory, vice grips are often used instead... but in my mind, these work nicely. Bill

No, not for a saftey, and if I now someone can help then I can tell APJ they don't need to be done, and just wait a bit.

I can't see your libby drum brakes being "all that different" than a TJ... someone correct me if I'm wrong. So, here is a step by step how to with pics and list of required tools for drum brakes on a TJ. www.4x4xplor.com/drum-brakes.htmlshould give you an idea of where to start anyway. personally, I think any monkey can do it... dirty job, frustrating sometimes with the dang springs but do one at a time and it shouldn't be rocket science.

Yeah what Bill asked.
I don't find them too much of a pain and I only use some screwdrivers and vise grips.
I'd like to help but I think my uncle is first in line for my wrenching this weekend, sorry.... Damn Intrepids.

I wish I had time to watch APJ do them, but I have to work and am going to struggle to get this into the shop and to work on time. Last time I was into APJ I asked them to adjust my e-brake and they did, and also told me my rear break shoes were almost worn.

Brakes do make me nervous though, if I do them myself, or with help, and they fail, its my ass on the line, not a garage. That scares me :S But, all of this DIY stuff scares me

I think for this time at least, I will let the pros do it. Next round I might try it msyelf, but, the fear of something going wrong, and since I do a lot of highway driving, that wont be fun if something goes wrong...
