Am I reading this right, so coasting down a hill in 4 wheel drive ( with clutch in ) can wreck your clutch? I would never have thought that, am I glad I read this before I did the same thing. If I understand it correctly, the problem is letting the clutch out (engaging) after coasting, especially with a 4:1 transfer case. A regular TJ may not ever see high enough transfer case rpm's to do this.

I can sort of see the rationale behind this in theory, but I would think that you would have to be going at a good clip before this would factor in. Mark said he put it in for about 10 ft or so...can't see the rpms getting high enough to do any damage...unless the clutch was on the way out in the first place. I don't make it normal practice to do this and then let the clutch out in first, but I am sure I have done the same thing over the past few years unintentionally. But being that I am far from a mechanic....Andre? Bennett? Stevens?...what's the scoop on this?

I would think its mostly due to the 4:1 t-case (5th gear low will get me to about 25kph lol, I can barely get moving in 1st, so you wouldn't have to get going fast to get the clutch going faster than the speeds it would normally see). Then again, I'm no expert. An expert opinion would be nice.

Well think about it, when your in first gear low range at redline, how fast does your wheels spin? not very fast, maybe 5 km/h? So when your in low range first gear and you let it cost up to say 20 km/h or so, your clutch will be spinning way faster than the motor would ever spin it.

"Was playin around in some soft sand, big hill. On one attempt down I decided to clutch in and roll down. Dumbass me. Near the bottom of the hill it acted like I let the clutch out yet I didn't in reverse. I then kicked it into neutral and once at the bottom of the hill found the pedal didn't do anything."
that makes it sound like he only "clutched in ", and that his clutch still went. Either way I won't be hypermiling it in 4 wheel drive.

Either way I won't be hypermiling it in 4 wheel drive. 4hi is find, same as 2wd (1:1 at the tcase), 4 low is where you could potentially run into problems. James

Been there done that... One time I came down a steep hill in a gravel pit and let the clutch out in 4WD Lo. It literally flew apart. My Jeep wasn't a Rubi and the clutch was pretty worn so I'm not sure if that's what happened to your's.

in my old CJ I coasted down a hill in 4 low, with the clutch in (disengaged).. got to the bottom and was barely moving, let the clutch out (engaged) and it destroyed it...hundreds of pieces it went to..tore my flywheel up, my pressure plate, everything..

Final update, The APJ boys are an awesome crew , thank you guys for the quick repair. The General needed a new clutch and runs good as new now. It could have been a number of issues that caused it as discussed in this thread but i can promise you this i will NEVER EVER do it again. If any good can come from this is that the jeepers reading this thread will learn from my mistake and save themselves a costly [glow=red,2,300]preventable[/glow] repair. anyone want to donate to the " General Lee Tire Fund" ?? I dont have any money left after my MVI and clutch repair. DOH!! ;D
