Recently had a chance to put in some seat time on a 2009 F350 XLT, crew cab, long box, 6.4 diesel, auto, 4X4, single rear wheel. The good; - feels like it could pull/ carry anything, lots of power - super quiet inside. You could whisper a conversation to the back seat passenger - great mirrors/ visibility - usually anything other then a reg cab truck looks goofy with an 8' box. I was surprised that this looked pretty sharp. The bad; - very noticeable turbo lag. Once it got rolling, it was a powerhouse, but from a dead stop it was gutless - breaks felt weak/ took considerable effort, however, in a emergency test it slowed down in an impressive hurry. Indifferent; - I put 200Km on it and averaged 12MPG. Considering it's size, that I was doing 90% back road driving with a load, and that I was getting after it semi regularly, I'm not turned off by this. I would expect high teens, to low twenties highway mileage. - it's huge! Definitely something one would have to get used to. You really have to plan out where you're going to park/ turn around/ get into. A back up camera would be the first thing to go on. Also, it's tall. You're looking down at the tops of cars in traffic, and being 6' tall it was a little hop down to get out. I quickly got used to using the side steps. Overall; I was interested to see how I would like it. Not particularly Ford, but just that cab/box/rear wheel configuration. I've got to say, I was sad to bring it back. It was really enjoyable to drive. Haven't heard the best things about reliability... also horror stories of the dealership having to remove the cab to work on the engine! When the time is right, I'll be looking at a similar Dodge.

Did you tow with it? Thats a serious truck... Misel has a F250 and I think he really likes it.

had a friend who worked for ford for awhile. he claimed it was only a couple hours to pull, and replace the cab. did it quite a few times. didn't seem to dread it too bad lol
thier nice trucks, but like all ton trucks now. they are just so damn high, makes it really hard to work in and out of the bed. and there's no need, other then looks. most have less clearance then my f-150....

Yep... pretty much the norm for the big Fords now. Not too bad while they're relatively new... Give it 10 years and it will bring the suck. Bill

There's an '06 or '07 loaded Ford F250 4 door diesel for sale in town. I love the thing, but hard to justify that much truck to tow a few times a year. Maybe someday.

I have no problem justifying that much truck! ;D The future plan is slide in camper & being able to tow the Jeep on a trailer behind, with a couple of rug rats.
I guess if we could decide that we'd only camp or wheel, and not both at the same time, we'd need much less truck... something we'll have to think about. Still a couple years away.
... and in that case a travel trailer would be another way to go.

I'm cheap that way. ;D If I bought that, I'd need some power goodies, if I had power goodies I'd want a camper, if I had a camper I'd want air bags....I'm looking at retiring someday, and it lines up with 2 kids university age, something has to give. I could sell all my toys but what fun would that be?

That's the thing I really don't like about Chev's, if they don't have a 4x4 sticker on them you can't even tell they are 4 wheel drive, damn lowriders. Guy at work has one and the bumper clearance is less than a small SUV.

Just looked at the pix via my BB. Thats longer than my Dodge. The crewcab is noticeably bigger. The F350 is better than the Dodge for load carrying hands down. I base this on numerous conversations with RV dealers, campers, and other people that I have met over the past year while touring around New England and the Maritimes. My own experience is that I have a 3700 lb camper in the back of the Dodge and would NOT put anything any bigger than that in there. She needs airbags to level it out. I went with the Dodge because it is the best TOW rig. This was gleaned from research, and has been supported by those I have met in the last year as well as my own experience. the Dodge, with a ram air, cold air intake, and full exhaust...without the camper, walks that 6000lb trailer off like it is not even there. SO... after much consideration, aside from the 40k investment in the truck and trailer and camper, I went with the great tow rig as I will tow way more often sans camper than not. Very happy with my choice. She averages about 12 MPG with the full meal deal (Camper, trailer w/Jeep) 14 MPG with the trailer/Jeep alone, and about 16 MPG empty. Good luck. Thats a big chunk out of your house budget though.

My brother has the same truck with the FX4 package. He wasn't impressed towing with until he put a Bully Dog on it. Avg 17mpg running around.
