I have a line on a 1995 YJ and a 1988 YJ. Both seem mechanically solid. Both have the same asking price of 4500.00 The difference is in their appearance. The 95 is stock 4L 135K. Hard and soft top. No add ons except for a Pioneer CD player which would probably get ripped off ASAP. Never off-road (so they say). The body is a bit ripe in 3 spots. The color is White....YUCK, so the rust sticks out like a sore thumb. To fix the holes, I would say a weld or two and a definate paint job. Floor looks pretty good. The inside looks dirty. Not really taken care of if you ask me. Lots of debris in the rear, dog hair on the seats, console is loose...just not clean. Oh....and a few other minor things; Driver side door latch is kinda loose, and the rear gate seems too be hanging low, gotta hold it up at the tire to close it. I kown these are minor issues but they all add up.
Now the 88 seems solid 4.2L 170K. Nice burnt Orange color. Frame and floor are solid. New carb rebuild kit. New 31's on her. No rust. Seems looked after. Engine is clean. Lift kit, Tow out points installed. Has some kind of lever inside to engage 4WD. Rebuilt transfer case. Thats about all I know. OPINIONS?

Neither, unless you want a open top jeep. If you dont, get an XJ. Better on and off road, rides better, more room, more comfortable, etc. For $4500 you should be able to get a good 91-93. If it is YJ for sure, you may want to look around some more, I would go with 4.0 EFI and would not consider a carb.

Not looking for a Cherokee........Already have a brand new SUV, and I am streatching it with the wife to buy the Jeep. Really looking for a YJ though. So why do u say the 95....Is it just the carb thing? What if it has the Webber or I put one in it......were the 4.2's JUNK.
Just curious.... Gary

Look at the price. A 95 for $4000...good price. An 88 for $4000, a bit too high, in my opinion. Rust is fixable. Stay away from carb. Beat him down a thousand on the 95 and use the savings on lift. Opinion of YJ owner.

Well forget the 88.......Not my cup of tea. Pretty bare inside, even for a Jeep. Had a prob starting it too. The thing is in great shape though. It would be an awsome trail rider but not a good daily driver.
I went to look at the 95 again, took some pics of the rust and the parts I think need some work. I think she has the dreaded Pugeot tranny......Not much up on the diff between the two different trannies and I am just going by a few posts I have read on them. Now that I went to look at her again the rust damage doesn't seem as bad as first thought. Nothing a grinder and some primer couldnt fix. Frame is solid....the rust I thought was on it is actually old undercoating seperating for the frame. Anyway if someone could look at the tranny pics and tell me if it has the Pugeot I would appreciate it greatly.
Also what about the 4 banger autos?..........I will not be doing any major trails but I would like to get a bit dirty now and then. Shold these be avoided or are they good daily drivers?
Cheers
Gary

IMO, the 4/auto is a dog. Having said that I wil sit back and wait for the flack. My buddy has a 4/auto '95 YJ and it is a slug. In town and highway. It is only semi-decent in low range.

Its not a Pugeot in the 95 unless someone put it in there. They only came in 87,88, half of 89. Bruce

im a firm believer in the injected 4 banger, only past 110km/h does the I6 make a big difference. and the way gas is in NS the 4 kills my I6 on gas mileage. the auto tho i have never driven, like any auto 4 banger id assume it robs the power from it. :-(
if i were u id stay away from the 95 unless u can talk em down, or if u can talk the 88 down quitr a bit id swing for it if u knew someone who could swap a decent 305, or I6 into her for ya. other than that thats all i can tell ya. i try not to buy anything that needs money thrown at it off the bat. are you from nova scotia? also the thing u were talkin about in the 88 you said u have to pull for 4wd? id assume its a posi lock acuator replacement ($200 cnd) or a locker ($400+ cdn) so that would be a bonus. i know somone sellin a burnt orange yj so lemme know where its from!!! hope this helps u man,
