I was thinking of doing the AW-4 tranny swap this summer in the ZJ. To get ready for it I am starting to collect the parts now (actually when I get home from Haiti). What I need info on is what parts do I need to get for my ZJ. Does any year tranny work for me or do I have to get the one for my year? What about the computer, do I need a new one? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Best way to do it would be to get a cheap rusty XJ and take everything you need off it and scrap the rest. That way you don't have look for all the separate parts.
You need:
trans with mount wiring computer (under dash) CPS some fab work for cross member and wiring driveshaft lengths changed

91 to 95 would be best and easiest to find.

I researched this a little bit recently, wasn't there one year ZJ (I'm thinking '93) that had the AW-4? That would provide all of the parts.

i think i have the ZJ aw4 out under a tarp, can't remember if i crushed it with the rig or pulled it. i didn't pull the harness or computer, so it doesn't really matter...I'd go with Alan's advice and get a rotten XJ.
The neat thing about the swap is the stand-alone computer for the trans.
