I just put an offer in for a TJ from texas. It's been living in Canada for several years, but has never been winter driven. It does not have a block heater. How much would a block heater be at the dealer, and is this something that would be much cheaper to get at the junk yard?

Are you sure about the block heater? They all have one. Get me the VIN # and I'll run it for you.Get a photo of the engine.

No, I'm not sure. I wasn't sure if it had one,.. the seller thought that it didn't. He could be wrong though... that would be nice. It was sold in texas, but you're right,.. it would be cheaper to put them on all vehicles than add them to some and try to predict where a car is going from the factory.

Even if you had to put one in, they just consist of a heating element and a frost plug. Can't be more than $50. You will have to drain the coolant and find an accessable frost plug to replace though.

Thats all they are. I think i paid roughly 40 plus tax for mine. They are fairly quick to put in if u use the forward most frost plug on the block. Just make sure u dont knoxk the old plug INTO the block itself and cause a blockage for the coolant!!! i almost lost one in thr last time!!
Good mod to have especially on older vehicles!!

I only lived in Alberta for 8 years and found a battery warmer/blanket was more effective than a block heater. A block heater will warmer up a small area around the heating element. It doesn't circulate the water throughout your system. With a battery warmer, your starting cranking power is the same as in the summer. Your oil maybe a little thick but it was designed the handle it. In addition, an in car warmer makes the inside of your vehicle shiver free. Both can be on the same 15 amp outlet, but restrict yourself to one 100 foot extension cord. Any more and there is too much load line loss. Overall a vehicle with a battery warmer, and an in car warmer will be on the road faster than any block heater. My 2cents worth.#nosmileys

Canadian spec vehicles are somewhat different with items like daytime running lights and bilingual stickers. John
