So a 12000 lb winch should have a 24000 snatch block I figure. Is this correct, also how many ton would that be. How do I tell if the snatchblock rateing is in imp or metric tone I dont want thing's flying apart or @ me or someone else,,,Da Dogg

1 long (or gross) ton = 2240 pounds (UK)
1 short (or net) ton = 2000 pounds (US)
1 tonne (i.e., a metric ton) = 2204.6 pounds
In the United States, when people say "a ton," they're thinking the short ton, or 2000 pounds.
So you should need a 12 ton snatch block!!?? The larger the diameter the pulley or sheave, the easier it will be on your cable in the long run..... Also a BIG thing to remember..........the more links in the run, the more things that can fail.!!!
Its only as good as its weakest link!!! This includes Shackles and tree straps!!! If you use a 10,000 lb D-ring on a double line pull from your 12K winch, you could possibly put 24,000 lbs on that now inadequate link..............
Something to keep in mind!! Know any tow truck operators or mobile crane operators? Worth talking to them!
Hope this helps and feel free anyone to correct misinformation!

Hmmm,,,ok well that seems to be 1 ton to the pound for a 12000 lb winch,,, This would seem to be a common formula,,,Hmmmm anyone know where to get a 12 ton snatch block,,,,Da Dogg

Also, always remember that a 12000 LB winch is only a 12000 LB on the very last run of cable on the drum.

Jeff Interesting i've never heard that before, is that because as the cable wraps around the drum, the drum actually becomes a larger diameter which would affect the pulling ratio? similar to gearing in a differential?

I'm not sure if that chart is accurate... most of them have 0lbs pulling ability ;D

Wow, every time I visit the tech section I learn something new.
Y'know if you really want to get technical these specs are for a dry pull across level ground. Typically you're winching out of a mud hole uphill then you need to add more pounds of pull.

Pulling out of mud or uphill doesn't change the line pull of the winch, just the effective weight of what you are trying to pull.
