No idea about a U-Joint. That hitch is rated at 3.5 tons.

I would still use a couple of spring bushings welded together then an axle shaft or similar for the back .

simple to build. could just put a swivel on a regular ball hitch. kinda like the back half of that fancy one, with a ball coupler on the end. we've got one for our 3 wheeler trailer... you can roll it completely over and not worry.
you can do the same with a ring for a pintle on the end...

Just run the pintle hook... You can buy the ring at princess Auto for $20 (not over with the hitch stuff, but over on the right back with the other misc. random junk they had a few which have a long tapered end on them - cut that off and weld it on) as well as the hook with the trailer ball on it and be done with it. Yes it will rattle around like crazy, and be annoying, and people will look at you as you drive by (I have a heavy duty trailer setup as for hauling hay that is a pintle hook) but it will cost little and just work... plus if you're like me you can use a large metal ring with a drop-pin down through the ring to tow it around behind the tractor on the draw bar...

Yeah, just worried about the trailer getting on too much of an angle, loaded,.... what's gonna give? Any idea how much angle a pintle setup can handle?
The long tapered end one is exactly what I need. I'll have to make a trip out this week to have a look. I've got an idea that I'll discuss with a machinist friend of mine.

Here's what it's supposed to look like; Here's what I have in mind to try and make; Hmm, turned out a little small. Basicly a thick walled tube with ends tapered in. The tube would be welded to the trailer's tongue. The eye goes through the pipe and is held on with a nut at the end. Between are tapered bearing, and washers. I just have to find an eye that's got enough of a tail to thread like this.

Could you use a 2wd front spindle and bearings and weld the ring to the end of it?
PA pintle rings may be long enough to do it .

I think with the pintle you will be fine to do anything besides driving over crazy terrain just to make odd angles and take pictures. I built myself a dump cart this past summer: {img]http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs398.snc4/46128_459965220691_507650691_7077672_8184837_n.jpg[/img] It holds a yard of soil - the tongue is a flat-bar for a hidden hitch for a car. I would just drop a pin down through it on to the draw bar of my tractor and away I went. I hauled ~30 loads over some pretty steep angles - at the end of this barn: The hinges are heavy door hinges I got from Home Hardware for $4 each... the whole thing cost me $50... (plywood/paint) Now yes I did bend the flat bar (part of the reason I picked up the Pintle ring) and the sides buckled out a bit (something about a skid steer "tapping" them with a full bucket of fill) but I could load the thing down so the tires were almost flat and haul away. I wouldn't take this on the open road - mostly because I have 2 washers on each wheel stud to space the tires out enough clear the sides, but it gives you a bit better idea of how little you actually need to do what you want to do.
