Found a nice build here; www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59698I was trying to see what dump angle is needed. At first I was going to try and set the cylinder up underneath like the guy did in the link above... but I think I'm going to go a different route. I'm thinking that I'm going to mount the bottom of the cylinder close to the tongue, and the top at the front top of the box. Like this; It won't be as pretty, but it'll be nice and simple, and the starting angle will be much, much more then the underside setup and it should yeild 45deg. After some quick trig. It would need an extended length of 77.35" A 2" bore PA cylinder has a push force ove 9,000lbs. Thoughts?

Seems like a lot of angle and would be pushing hard on the headboard of the trailer in order to lift a load of sand or gravel would it not?

I thought the dump would be actuated from underneath... am I missing something?

The cylinder like that puts a huge amount of stress on the system. Stick to underneath.

I was going to reinforce the top of the headboard... idea's not dead, but I'll go back to the drawing board and see how underneath could work. More trig. The reason I don't much like the "under" style is because initial lift is the toughest, and the most in-efficient. The more horizontal separation between the ends of the cylinder the better... the way I posted above has 18" of separation. The frame end would have to hang down 18" below the frame in order to get the same effect. 45deg enough for dumping?

I was also thinking that I'd like to use the cylinder for a splitter... it'd be easy just to pull two pins and remove it if it was on the tongue... I'd probably go to a 3" if I was going to use it for that though.

I think you would need more like 75 degrees for dumping.

might be better off to go with a sissor lift style hoist. i know of a few 3 ton trucks that run them, they work good. fast. enough power and a great dump angle

I have 3 dump trailers at my house. One of them is a scissor lift style. You are welcome to come have a look at them and I can show you how they work and maybe it will give you some ideas.

I'm sorta confused as to the the usage of the trailer and the budget comment you just made. The budget had money for two brand new aluminum rims 'for looks?' to match your Jeep, to drive around your property hauling dirt, but not $$ put aside for having a safely engineered lift unit? Cost gotta be about the same? i'm thinking the dump isn't really needed. Park on a little hill and push the dirt out. I do like the idea of a swingout woodsplitter tho, that was a neat idea when you were talking about it, it would be fun to learn about making hyd. systems, make the trailer dual purpose for hauling logs and splitting. Back to the dump idea. Put the cylinder up straight in front of the dump. build a bridge up the sides of the dump trailer that goes over the top of the cylinder. The idea is that the cylinder can stay almost vertical. Look at any full size dump truck or dump trailer and copy it. Nevermind that sissor stuff, you need mechanical design work to do that. Welding and machining and tolerances. Perhaps not part of the budget. There are air/hyd cylinders are PA now for $80 or $100. Look at my new bender thread, that cylinder is avail at our store. you already have air on the Jeep.

put the cly straight up and down and a pulley on the top (moving) end..run a cable over the pulley to the frt of your dump.hook the other end solidly to your trailer. As the cly goes up the dump will come up and you'll only need a cly half as long.
