Have no fear, everything was hammered on with the needle scaler. pinholes would have been blown open. How do you like the colors of the new buggy? lol, just kidding . That's zinc chromate primer for aluminum. ohh, ahhh. Didn't take the heads off or test compression. lol She's a rattle-can rebuild. Chevy orange, baby! I couldn't resist, its my first Chev parts I've ever frigged with, so I figured I'd assimilate and get it over with.

...And on to the trans....I still don't know if this is a 700R4 or a 4L60blah blah blah, I never looked. It has a cable kickdown and overdrive, no computer. Big 'K' on the tunnel, and a 27 spline output. Into the shower! Cleaned and on the stand.....was very nice looking inside. new filter welded in a drain plug zinc primer again Buy products from the biznitches on my fridge. That is worth more free stickers, don't you think? ;D More Chevy orange! coming out nice, the paint is sticking good. Oh yeah, put an input seal in the trans...$6.32 ea, in stock.

Now for some tech you may not have seen before...... this drivetrain came with a 231c...for Chev. I researched that the input gear would swap with the 231 Jeep, so I was thinking I could make a Jeep 231 reduction box like the Pirateship if I could find the GM 208 adapter for the back of the trans, since it has the round pattern we are familiar with. Chev 231c - damn, that chain is twice as wide as a Jeep. Here is the reduction planetaries.....pretty much same as Jeep, with Hi/Low range shifter included. Wait a sec....that's 6 pinion gears vs Jeep's 3. Wow! awesome. Justashaft! i had Alan make me this a few years a go, and never got around to doing anything with it. I had it stress relived and hardened by a member of the CF who does a lot of the training for exotic alloy welding and heat treating for our military. He has advanced training in all aspects of the topic, an expert and said to be one of the best welders in the Forces. Brother in law of a friend. Its made from a turned down and splined mainshaft out of a 231J. and this is the 231c mainshaft right next to it. It appears to me to be exactly the same! It slips into the CHEV t-case perfectly!!! Now I can use the CHEV 231 as a reduction box and buy no adapter for the trans! Now, to expand on this - Jeep 231's can have CHEV 6 planetary low range sets, AND a much larger chain swapped in! The front output on the t-case is 27 spline, so you have to use the chev yoke, but it is a 1330 joint. Me and Mike checked all this tonight, and its new info to us. Pretty cool stuff.

What else do I have laying around here...... Hello....? The parts barn and pile of crap comes thru again! D300 in great shape from Bill C. The Justashaft looks right at home stuck into that D300, made for it! Me and Mike are both greatly impressed with the fit and finish of the Justashaft, the splines are nice and tight radially, but slide in/out smooth. Perfect. There is a nice large radius in the blend from stock shaft to new splines to reduce a focal point for stress.

Good to see you finally have a use for the shaft!
I found out about some of the same parts in the chev 231 this summer. A friend put a YJ dana 30 and springs in an s10 and he got some Jeep 231 parts from me for his t-case.

That is painful work cleaning old engine grease/oil. Looks like it was worth it though... the chevy orange looks good. I love the 'parts pile d300' find

Nice work Jan, looking forward to seeing what you build around this powerplant.
I laughed when I saw the kitty litter, as far as I know you don't have any cats, just there to soak up the oil. It works great, I've had to use it many times.
Keep the updates coming man!

CATZ MUST DIE! Well its a surprize to see you post up Ryan....that was Yannick (sp?) who did the heat treating, btw. Ride awn, brother. Glad to have you aboard. Come home and build one of these things, its a great scene to get involved in, you'll need a 4 seater tho!

I wonder how the yellow laser light from Pinion's eyes works in comparison to the red from Tracy's cat.

If you went that far, why no new pistons & rings? I bet they're cheap and in-stock too.

I wonder how the yellow laser light from Pinion's eyes works in comparison to the red from Tracy's cat. I've been saving the pic to counter the lazer cat, but the opportunity hasn't come up yet and I couldn't wait any longer. lol If you went that far, why no new pistons & rings? I bet they're cheap and in-stock too. They are definetly cheap and in stock, but I have no reason to replace pistons in a running engine. New rings would require a cylinder bore, additional cost for no gain. I didn't do the head gaskets because the exaust manifold studs are roasted and I didn't want to get into that, and again because the engine is supposed to be a fine runner. One can blow the entire budget on engine mods. Now, once the chassis is done...IF the engine is NOT a runner, I can quickly pull it and have rebuilt within a few days. Properly by getting a bore job, planed heads, and new bearings. I can put a little cash into the motor after the rest is done. This is how you avoid getting in over your head and having a never ending money-hole of a project. You can blow thousands on a motor and not have one lick of tube work done. I'm not into that. i need an assembled drivetrain to build a chassis around. If the drivetrain components are not healthy once the chassis is built, I will deal with it then. This aligns with the 'cheap, easy' choice of using Chev. Rue's got one for sale for $250. There are tons more on kijiji. Its not a worry, I need to move to the next step of the build. thx for the comments!

Mocking up the 231c reduction box and D300. the front output part of the front half of the 231c will be cut off. Its pretty short compared to any other reduction box combo. The 231c shares the 2.72:1 ratio of the Jeep t-cases, and the D300 is 2.6:1 iirc. The shifters are on opposite sides and look like they will work in their stock configurations, and be right beside each other in the cab. approx clocking postions I'm going for. The D300 will probably be a touch higher, and like I said earlier, the 231c will be chopped off. D300 output will probably need to have a two piece front shaft to clear the trans pan. Keep in mind there will be a big flat skid there, the d-shaft can't just droop. A steady bearing will be in the vicinity of the starter. This is the fun stuff! I'm going to make the adapter on the plasma table.
