July was all about throwing a set of flares on long enough for inspection, new mud flaps, getting it inspected and cruise around. While putting flares on today my neighbor asks why the rear wheel is laying in on the top. My generic answer is always one spring pack has less arch than the other, it just looks funny. He says no, come see. He's right, the axle housing is bent at the perch. I guess it got soft from rust and weakened. I have another housing, but it needs shock mounts, leaf perches, etc. Guess I'll get the spring rearched while I'm at it. Damn!

In hindsight it might have. The locker seemed to make more noise than it should have, but it was typical locker noise. Locker might be quiet with a straight axle housing.

Now that it's out I had a good look, one of two things happened, either the tubes were ground down too far to remove the perches or rust flaked it away, there's actually a pinhole by the spring hanger, it is thin. I think it's just rust. If I remember correctly that housing was found in a field many moons ago. My spare is in better shape. I was going to get my leafs re arched tomorrow and new ubolts made but just got called to work. That sucks! Have to wait til Monday.

I think I have some new perches sitting somewhere in the garage if you need them in short order.

Took the springs to a shop to get one rearched, of course they insisted on rearching both of them. Now at full droop my pinion yoke is maxed out and binds. While I was waiting for the springs I got my spare axle cleaned up and ready, spring perches removed and set up like the old one, shock mounts welded on. When I mounted it up I found the binding, so I cut the perches off again and rounded up parts to make a CV shaft. The front CV yoke on an XJ NP231 is the same spline count as my Dana 300, it bolts right up. Using a front XJ shaft grafted onto a Toyota slip and yoke. Biggest problem is the driveshaft tube size, it's 1/2" difference, so the Toy part will get turned in a lathe to match the XJ tube. Rear end mocked up waiting for the driveshaft.

Time to get back to the Jeepster for some upgrades. Put an adjustable electric fan control in last week, since I sometimes forgot to turn the fan on, works great so far. I've had TJ rear seat belts for awhile and want to get them in before the Jam. I have to add mounts to the roll bar, and it never got finished anyway. I put two pieces front to back to mount the seat belt roller, they will also tie to the wheel wells for an additional support and two pieces for the top bracket to mount to. This cross piece never got added. The upper mounts. The cuban rum.... I'll tack the pieces in and pull the whole thing out and weld it.
