To whom it may concern:
This is not the 1st time this is happening to me. Also, I am pretty sure, it has happened to someone else.
At some point of time, a NSJC member will break down at a NSJC monthly’s run (trail) or at the Jam itself. At the amount of money that a member spends to go to the Jam and the effort put in their Jeep to ensure that the Jeep is ready for a trail. It would make sense that we all help each other so we can come out of the trail or finish the weekend at the Jam.
Here is my point: Like many other NSJC members, I usually carry an assortment of spare parts and a lot of different fluids (I have to, I drive a YJ). Whatever I have other people can have. There are some spare parts or fluids that are pricey and/or hard to get replacements. I can recall that I had let go some parts like: wheel bearing, drive shaft, starter, alternator, axle, brand new U-Joint… a gallon of transmission fluid, engine oil, brake fluid… heavy duty cargo strap.
The way, I see it. If you are the one who needs whatever another NSJC member may have in his possession. You should ensure that the same parts or another at the same or better quality is returned in a timely fashion. I am not talking about a hose clamp, a small piece of rubber hose.
Here is my latest bitch. During this year NSJC Jam, someone broke down; no spare parts available from anywhere. I am a local resident. I live only 10 minutes from the camp site. I was contacted to see what I might have at my house. I did not have that part but I was able to contact my friend, a non NSJC member, who has 7 Jeeps in his back yard. I made arrangement for the member in needs to go and remove the required part. Assuring my friend, that the part will be returned, reinstalled in a couple of weeks and a 6 pack of beer will be included. It was agreed upon.
Now 3 months went by. After many calls from my friend wondering what is happening with his part. Finally, the replacement part has been returned to me (no beer included for my friend). The part needs to be repaired; a u-joint is bad. I have to find someone to help me fixing and installing the part. Also it will cost me money to get that part repaired and to buy the beer that has been promised.
Now I am just wondering. If the next time, I will be interested to call my friend for spare part, when someone is in needs, or even offering anything I may have. Anyhow, I will not be able because my spare parts locker is dried out because people do not bother to return any.
Well, this is out of my chest. Let see if I will feel better… nope, yet … nope, now… nope.
