I have a 2001 Jeep grand Cherokee that won't backup in reverse when I give it gas. It will backup on flat ground at idle but with gas it won't move... Does anyone have any idea what this can be?? i really dont want to drop the transmission out...

How many kms on it? fluid and filter ever been changed? What color is the fluid - red or brown and burnt?
As Creepy asked, have you checked the fluid level?

there is about 260 000 km, i bought this jeep used 4 months ago... so im not sure if it was ever changed. I just checked the transmission fluid and the fluid seemed to be fine... could it be the rear diff oil???

I'd start with a fluid and filter change (not a flush), maybe add a can of Lucas auto transmission additive and see if that helps.

I'd go with how God hates you first, then realize only Tow Mater can drive backwards at any real speed with precision.
Make sure when you check your transmission fluid it's warmed up, drive it around for a bit (10-15 mins), put it in all the operating modes and when you're ready leave the engine going and pull the dipstick out. Should be a deep bright red (similar to a red syrup in color).

if it idles backwards, would that mean the gearing in the transmission is still good?? may just need to adjust the reverse band by removing the oil pan...I just put a brand new engine in, and i realized how much of a pain it was, i really dont wanna have to swap transmission... I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade so im not too sure with the inner workings of the transmission on my jeep.

Do you feel any slippage in forward gears? If you stomp it from a start in forward does it take off good? It moves in reverse at idle so its engaging the gear and sounds like its slipping. I believe reverse is lower gearing than 1st so slip would occur more easily.
I'll stick with fluid and filter change first before digging further. No idea if the bands can be adjusted on your tranny.

Ok thanks Enos, but just to clarify, would a slippage require a tranny swap??

I came over and checked it out. It drives forward without any issues, feels 100% fine and dandy. It idles backwards nicely too, but when you hit the gas it hitches and stutters and jumps, feels like something is loose or sticking.
Transmission fluid doesn't look too old but could probably stand a changing.
And Marc, the NP242 was used in a lot of the Dodge/chrysler/Jeep lineups, not just jeeps. Keep that in mind.
