i have a 91 yj with a 3" suspension lift and 3" body, with 35 x 17, it rides extremely rough, even rougher then a jeep should, i am looking to see from your experience what is the best most cost effective shock with boot to buy to make it smoother on highway
thanks

New spring packs? Shock boots only hold moisture, and mud and aid in the deterioration of the piston shaft. As for shocks, last set I bought were procomps and weren't as "harsh" as others I had on.

go with the gas charged shocks pain to install but well worth the spinal comfort

take the body lift out and find some stock springs and do a SOA.

Thr rough ride is mostly in the lift springs, you won't be able toi make the ride much smoother........just a result in the higher arch needed to achieve the lift. SOA will cost you a lot to do prioperly by the time you do a high steer system properly and fab up all thje bracketry.

It's a YJ. They ride like a tractor with lifted springs. I keep this in mind, and give er. Actually, one thing to check is if your shackles are swinging properly. If they arn't moving, you have zero suspension movent, and it will be spine-jarring. Have someone (the heavier the better) jump up and down on the front bumer, then the rear bumper to make sure the shackles are swinging properly and not binding. Rob D

Make sure the shocks are the correct length and not bottoming out early.

More weight may help, perhaps a V8 swap

well, since you have been told to do a V8 swap, and so go SOA already, you may as well put flat front Waggy springs in front and rear for an inch or two of stretch at each end. that will make the ride better too!
My YJ was so rough before, when I had 4" procomp springs. when I hit a hard bump, it felt like it was gonna bruise my tailbone. I used rear 4" springs in the front of mine when I rebuilt the rig to make the front end ride a little smoother. a front shackle reversal may also help take away some of the hard impact of the bumpy roads.

Dan, are the waggy springs longer then stock yj but same width? all of the dimensions are the same, except they are 44" long, and from centre to one spring eye is 23", offset from pin to other eye is 21". YJ springs I believe are 42" long, and are 21/21 from eye to pin to eye. good for a 2" stretch. the Rancho p# 44044 is a common one to use, it gives about 2.5"-3" of lift SUA., or 6-7" of lift SOA. a stock waggy spring is good for a low (compared to other soa's) SOA lift, close to the same as stock YJ springs SOA.
