I know this is not directly related to Jeep. But more people will be able to read this without going to the off topic with a password.
May be at some point this could be moved to the safety section after it goes dormant.
A few weeks ago a young man lost his life on Torbrook RD, only 1 mile from my house. There are already many versions of what and how it happened.
I knew Spencer, a young man, 19 years old, home schooled, did not drink or smoke, very polite. I hired Spencer a few times to help me to carry out heavy tasking around my house.
Here is my version, it may not be exactly but there is a point that I am trying to put across.
Spencer was driving home after helping a local farmer, about 2 miles from his house. His truck ran out of gas about 1/8 of mile from his house. He could actually see his house. He called his dad to ask him to bring him some fuel. His dad parked his truck, tail gate to tail gate. His dad stayed there till Spencer's truck was running, but Spencer had trouble with his tranny linkage. He went under to deal with the linkage, then he got back into his truck.
His father left, while looking into his rear view mirror, he saw that Spencer was going back under his truck. His father did a 3 points turn at the 1st driveway only 50' away. He then stopped behind Spencer's truck to see if he needed help.
I reckon the time that went by is less than 2 minutes.
Spencer was still under his truck with no respond, his dad realized that there was something wrong. He tried to push the truck by hand but no luck. At that specific moment a nurse drove by, stopped to offer help. But all she could do is to tell the dad it was too late. Spencer was already dead. All that was within 3 to 5 minutes.
Somehow the truck moved. The transmission cross member hook Spencer's head and broke his neck.
From where we are right now reading this, we can all say:
- He should had done this and that....
- Ah! young kids today...
- So on and so on...
It is a long story, but it is to let all of you be aware of how fast an accident can happen. We all take short cut, specially in the trail, in our own driveway or in our garage. Why do we do that?
It takes only a few seconds to chuck the wheels either, with the proper item or improvised with a rock or a log
It takes only a few seconds to put a safety stand under the axle or to improvised with a tire, a rock or a log.
It takes only a few seconds to put a pair of gloves on, to put on a pair of safety glasses on.
I am not going to bring anything right now with winching, that is a story of its own.
But I am inviting everyone of you to reflect on how you deal with safety or lack of should I say. You all heard or seen something unsafe. Please bring your own experience into this thread, and perhaps your two cents could save someone life.
Spencer, we will miss you in Torbrook. R.I.P.
