easiest way for me personally to tell it is an M38, is because it has a battery box cover on the cowl, also, look at the grille, it has a 7-slat grille, not a 9-slat grille. MB's had a 9-slat grille

It doesn't have a 2 piece windshield, so it's not a CJ2A, so I'd say it's a CJ3A.

Windshield is definitely a 3A - one piece, venting with bottom wipers. www.cj3a.info/cj3a/cj2acj3a.htmlI've seen it around Chester a couple of times, really nice looking Jeep.

Not to make this into a pissing match, but the windshield doesn't look like it has the fold-out vents, maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Also, M38's had bottom-wipers, and were one-piece, maybe not all of them, but some definately were. it has the tie-downs along the sides which are military specific also. it also has a cut-out in the side of the hood for the military snorkel. I do notice that it has signal lights in the front in place of the black-out lights, but that may have been something done for safety.
This thing could also be a mis-match or parts, which happens often.

Looking closer, you're right Dan. the dual windshield vent covers (as opposed to the single center vent on the 3A) plus the little panel in front of the rear wheel all add up to a M38

Mine's a glass tub so its missing alot of the identifying features. But isn't there a cut out under the doors for a shovel on the M38's? Also missing the blackout light on the driverside front fender. I'm going with miss match of parts.

yeah... the M38's windshield vent was bolted shut, like this one... the 3a's was operational and didn't have the bars in front of the centre louvre. This is beginner stuff... for shame Justasons... Bill

That's Mervin Zinck and it is a 1946 Army Jeep. He also has 2 mint 1947 Fargo's and an airplane that he built himself. He might had looked cranky but he's a very nice guy. He runs a trucking company just outside of New Germany.

I don't know much about the military Jeeps, never have much interest in them. This one doesn't seem to be restored to original though, from the pics I just looked at.

Yes that was him found that out later on. ;)He may have not been cranky but I think surprised. We pulled a u-turn in our Liberty in the road and took his picture so he might of wondered what we wanted? Anyhoo great response to this picture and there are many of you quite informed on the old vintage stuff!

No worries... just giving you a hard time for for labeling that Austin Gypsy so easily No excuse for your brother... he's spent entirely too much time on earlycj5.com. If the jeep is indeed a "46", then it's definitely not entirely an M38. Tub and windshield definitely appear to be M38... but who knows for sure what parts it's made of. Bill
