Looks like a thrust washer, from behind the side gear

it's a spool, so no sidegears but still thrust washers ?

Full spool, or mini? If it is a full spool could be just left overs from earlier carnage

it's a spool, so no sidegears but still thrust washers ? a mini spool will still use thrust washers, but they don't spin. Not having them in place will allow side to side movement, increasing clearance around the drive pin thru the carrier. I'd fix it. The pin will get beat to hell and break. Not familiar with 14bolt, but that's what would happen on a normal carrier with one pin. I know some 14bolts have 4pins and a split carrier. If its a full case spool, no washers.

well since no-one can remember what was in it, I'll take the carrier out and have a look - just sealed it up thinking it was a spool but now I'm not so sure - oh well at least I didn't fill it up yet.

Could be the orb of traction. In which case the washers would still be there.

not sure about anything - I thought the front D60 was welded and for some reason thought the 14bolt was a spool - at the Rubi now so it will have to wait

If its welded 'orb of traction' (love that lol) those could fall out and it doesn't matter.
There is no need to remove the carrier, all you have to do is look at it with the diff cover off.

I believe the spiders are incased in the case. So only way to tell is to take it apart
