I just bought a new 2012 JK altitude edition a couple months ago and i am finding quite a bit of rust underneath it already. there is a big spot on the frame rail and it's all over the u-joints and other spots behind the drivers side wheel. i was stupid enough to pay the dealership $1100 for an undercoat which they claim is good for 10 years but it looks to me like they haven't even put it on. just wondering if anyone else has seen this problem. i'm a little worried since it's a brand new vehicle and its only 2 months old. i brought it in to the dealership and they took pics and sent them to ontario to have them look at it but the guy at the collision centre seemed to think it wouldn't be covered. so far i'm not really impressed with the service at steele chrystler.

take your own pictures and post them up here. Anyone that owns a Jeep is very well or will become very well educated in the rust department.

Undercoat should have the frame fully covered. Especially an $1100 job. That's wicked high price.
U-joints would not generally be undercoated, they are raw steel and will flash rust outside very quickly.
Post pics for us, and we'll tell you what's up.

if it's rusty now then undercoating will do nothing, it needs to be cleaned to bare metal and repainted

i'll try to get pics on here tonight. i'm just concerned because i've only had the jeep for 2 months and it already has rust and we haven't had any salt on the roads yet. i'd say i definately got scammed on the 10 year undercoat for $1100. i'm going to try to get them to clean and repaint and give me my money back for the undercoat then just go get krown.

I remember a friend paying $400 for undercoat on an Acura years ago and thought that was rediculous. If the undercoat isn't obvious and you can't feel it they need to explain why. If it's transparent stuff you will still be able to see through it but feel it on there. Does the $1100 include yearly touch ups, or anything extra?

When I got my 2011 jk I paid for the 10 year... Its not your regular type of undercoat, I had to take my jk in and get it done they didn't do it before I took it off the lot. Are you sure they did it, because the 10 year one I got is a black coating almost like rubber... I can't even see the frame metal on mine. I also had the paint wax spray for rust as well. Obviously they don't cover rust that is created in side a scratch but if bubbling occurs they say its covered. I am not sure how they can fight and say they won't do anything about the rust already occuring when its a 10 year warranty... also same as creepy said the drive shaft and u joints will show surface rust after even 1 day of being wet, and they don't cover protection on those parts.
So anyhow, your 10 year plan sounds as it should be the same as mine, so I am not sure how you are seeing rust... Maybe they came out with another undercoating since last year. But there was only 2 types when I went in, and the other one was the box attached to the jeep that's magic! Lol but I wasn't paying the price for that... Was surprised I even agreed to what I did! Lol

They threw in the 'magic box' for free on mine. Every now and then I look at it and chuckle.

My wife bought her JKU at Steele as well and the night we picked it up there was over spray all over the paint and glass, it is all over the inside of door kick panels and over hinges where it really isn't needed and completely missed parts of the frame. she bought the undercoat package with the paint and interior protection. The first time I washed it was 2 days old and the left front headlight as a obvious scratches and on to the hood about 1 inch long , they tell us they put paint protection on it , so called them and the salesman said that he will make sure it gets taking care of. We haven't had time yet but it will be there soon. The funny thing is we filled out their customer survey and this was all mention and in the comment section we said look forward to hear from you please respond . 2 months and waiting ...............

Take your $1100, put it in a high interest savings account and it will pay for a really nice body job in 10 years! Better yet, go to Krown or Rust Check that has a corrosion warranty when you use their services annually for the life of your car.

For 1100$ they should have given you a pair of golf tees to rest your balls on while driving.

we do warranty work for chev and dodge at work, and both breeds are rusting on the lots. both manufacturers are using recycled materials in their vehicles and the process in china for steel contains alot of contaminates. alot of the problem is there is no surface prep done and the oem coating is put right over the mill scale which doesn`t rust it falls of because of rust under it. the magic boxes for rust are not installed properly that i have ever seen, the zinc probe has to be put on bare metal inorder to work properly not just screwed on and the rubber mounts stop it from protecting the frame. the dealers are paid flat rate to undercoat so they spray a little and even if they drill the holes to put it in they only spray about2-3 inches inside the holes-ocassionaly you get a tech who cares but not often. the body has probably 5 year or so many km warranty but the chassis i`ve never gotten bullitens to do it and a dealer is apt to put asphalt undercoating on it and not blast or clean the rust off so it will fester under there and come out worse with pits in the frame material. this is just my experience with the administrative end.
