Why not weld the nuts into the frame from underneath ? Drill the holes bigger then the nuts , so there is room for weld between the frame and the outside of the nut . That's what I always do

That's what I always do Now there's an easy idea! You know, I probably could have just as easily done that from the start. hind-advice is 20/20 they say! haha Thanks for the moral support guys!

You're not using a stock skid, why bother having the holes in the frame at all? Drill holes in your skid to the inside of the frame, make tabs to weld to the inside of the frame, bolt them to the skid, jack skid in place, tack tabs to frame. Take skid down, finish weld tabs, then bolt skid back up with 1/2 carriage bolts going up threw. Then you will just have the nice round head of a carriage bolt on the bottom.

Even since you have a body lift you could have easily drilled right up thru the frame and bolted at the top as well. lol
Lots of ways to do it but this way you had the opportunity to clean out the shit in the frame at the same time. Now hurry the hell up and finish it... Only 7 nights left to work on it.

haha I see the benefit, in a parallel universe somewhere I am getting something right.
Well I finally finished my first ultra mini fab project. Except for my little mess up by accidentally welding the bolt in. On a scale of 1 to 10 about a 7. I am happy.
I'll also be even more happy tomorrow because I know my neighbours will be happy when I get my Jeep back from the exhaust guy.
Any recommendations on drilling through 1/4" plate? I have a big old burly drill press but I don't know if even that's up to the task. I bought three packs of those step drill bits from crappy tire, I imagine ill be burning through those in no time. how do you guys make your bits last? low speed and lubrication?

The step drills don't really like material deeper than the steps. You'll be drilling 2 diameters at once in 1/4". It works, it isn't ideal. It should be no problem for one quality drill bit in say a 1/2" or 9/16" size, to drill 6 mounting holes. Slow rpm, and some oil will def. help keep it sharp for the job.
I use step drills to chamfer big drilled holes. Do both sides, it looks nice.

What I have always done is to start my holes with a small pilot bit (1/4 or less), step up to a bigger one (3/8ish) then up to 1/2, and if you are oversizing the holes, use either a 9/16 or 5/8 bit, or a step bit for the last step up to clean your opening up.

I center drill for location only. Then go to full size. Stepping up in small increments dulls bits, you wind up blowing the edges off. Drills are meant to drill full diameter, with a small pilot being acceptable. Modern split points are very good at not needing a pilot.
Also, I use step drills on any material below the thickness of the step on the stepdrill. Awesome for sheet metal work.

great tips! i will put them to use! I got the jeep back from the muffler shop. Sounds soooooo quiet.... it shouldn't be that quiet. when you come onto it, it sounds like its breathing through a straw and i killed a 1/4 tank in 50kms. My verdict. The muffler is on the wrong way. I bought one of those fancy dynomax with the valve in it that opens up to a straight through when you stomp it but it quiet it on the highway. I clearly marked it and showed it to the exhaust guy I'll have to crawl under and take a look tonight, maybe I marked it wrong!
