To find the rpm to run a drill at, use this formula:
4 x cutting speed divided by the drill diameter
Cutting speed for mild steel is 80, so for a 1/2" drill it's 640 rpm.
My drill press has 640 as one of it's speeds, and that's where I keep it most of the time. If I'm using a bigger drill or drilling a harder material, then I slow it down. I don't usually speed up for smaller drills.
Cutting speed for aluminum is 200-300, but you don't need to speed up that much, you just can.
On a drill press, a pilot drill isn't necessary under 1/2", but I often do for 1/2". General rule for a pilot drill size is for it to be just a bit bigger than the thickness of the web of the larger drill.

Very good technical information thanks Alan! Well I crawled under the jeep today to check on my exhaust, he installed it the proper way. I also fixed my pinion angle but the jeep still feels down on power and the exhaust sounds like absolute crap. Instead of it sounding like a rumble like it used too, it sounds like a woosh, almost like what a hover craft sounds like. It's totally weird. I cut 12 inches off the tail pipe and it improved the sound a bit but not much. I also had an insane scare today, I've known that I needed new hardtop hinges for awhile now but keep putting it off. well: It was literally hanging on by the wires. I don't know how it didn't break, and what a mammoth trying to unhook the wires and rods while holding it! Not much left to do on the Jeep now, wire up my rear locker, change some fluids and pack for JAM!!!!!!! I am skipping the outboard as there just isn't enough time.

I am skipping the outboard as there just isn't enough time. Can you post pics of the Ford brackets you bought? (if you have them already). Something to tease us until you get back at it? Jonathan

They are back in the thread somewhere, I'll see if I can find them and post them.

4 things since Jam..
1) I go through front track bars quite often (2 in less than a year) 2) I have death wobble now (a product of the above) 3) Rotating my pinion extended my shocks far enough so that I no longer bottom them out. BONUS! 4) My tie rod nuts came loose and likely self adjusted the toe, which is likely a contributing factor to my death wobble.
Is there a front track bar upgrade out there that eliminates the ball joint end that can work with 0" lift? Everything I've seen has a drop down bracket and then the track bar attached to that. Found one. Rough Country, skipped right over it.
Probably time to give the front end a little TLC anyway, bushings are original, drag link is original. I imagine after The Crusher and 300kms of highway driving on unbalanced Super Swamper's, that did a lot of things in.

I run a stock tracbar with 2", no prob with the 33" bias TSL's. Get a good one from dealer or a lifetime Moog, it will be fine if toe and everything else is OK.
ps: how did the flat belly skid hold up?

It faired better than I expected for being a stock height Jeep. My body mounts and control arm mounts took most of the abuse. If I had have had more time I would have made a true 3/4 spacer for the skid rather than using just nuts. The edges of the skid plate are a little wavy now. I think the cross member only being a hair thickness away from the skid and the bends at both ends will work well enough. I dragged a lot through the crusher and I realize now I may not have gained a whole bunch of clearance but it's the smooth underbelly that made the biggest difference.

Looks can be deceiving! Got me a bad case of the death wooblies been able to drive it by lowering the air pressure in the front tires and sawing the wheel back and forth once I hit 80kmh. Parts are on their way to cure: Track bar from Rough country which eliminates the ball joint type connection at the frame end, Complete drag link as the ends are original and could benefit from a replacement, control arm bushings and new front upper control arms! then it will be time to do the rear again!

Looks good, at least. Those new tires? I assume you are saving the TSLs for trail duty.

Traded my KM2's for the AT's a little while back, they were used but in great shape. My lazy'ness dictates how long each set stays on for. The TSL's stayed on for a couples weeks after jam, funny though, I had no death wobble with those?

Yeah, the lazy-bug had me when it came to swapping tires. I never swapped back to the DD GYs from the TSLs since the Relay For Life Run until after we did Sweetland on the 15th !
