plus if you have a spare tire on back it seems to act as some kind of a target for people with stingers then you end up with a useless tire and your tailgate bent into a "V" shape

The stiff tailgate is from corrosion in the hinge pins. I drilled and put grease nipples in my 98. Took a bit of pressure and some time but it freed up and worked like new. Corrosion will happen no matter what size tire you hand on it.

interesting. you have pics on where you installed the fittings?
Actually the stiffness that it's at now is convenient in a way that it keeps the tailgate from unexpectedly cross checking me into the back seat

I just spoke to my fabricator and we are gonna gear something up to mount the tire inside vertically, tight to the back of the front seats. With the LJ there is still plenty of storage even with the tire in there as I don't use the back seat but very rarely.
