Don't know if this has been brought up before? This is my first LJ and wondering people's thoughts on a 33" tire on the tailgate, like the factory mount?Does it wreck it from the weight of the tire?I presume it would over time or maybe sooner than I think?Who's running theirs this way and lets here your 2 cents!

I ran a 33 on mine didn't seem to be to hard on it..... I see a lot of other run 33"s all the time and have no issue ... If its. On a stock rim it won't fit u will need a offset rim or a mount from rc

extend the rubber bump stops on the tail gate so the tire doesn't want to twist the tailgate.

Also, you will have to raise your third brake light with spacers and longer bolts, otherwise the tire will hide it.
It's heavier for sure, could start to pull the bolts through the tailgate and is definitely harder on the hinges. So far so good on mine too.

Bigger ain't better Are you still talking tires ... ? haha To the original poster- I know it's tempting to go for 33x12.5 for the look of tires bulging out the sides... it's the classic Jeep look. But if your Jeep is going to spend most of it's time on the road, and yours is still very shiny so I would think it's a Daily Driver, consider 33x10.5 Cost benefits- Cheaper to buy in the first place Fits on Jeep on stock rims without rubbing the rear coils. 12.5 is going to rub the rear coils without offset rims or spacers. Less rolling resistance so better mileage. Easier on wheel bearings, steering parts and arguably front axle ujoints when offroad. Other- Way easier to whoa it up with skinnier tires. Takes more brake to stop with wider tires I found. Much better handling in snow and ice. Wider tires can be like toboggans. Less lift needed to keep skinny's out of your fender flares . Less weight on your tailgate if using stock mount. That said... the 12.5 tires of the same kind and height are way easier to roll through rough stuff offroad. Aired down a bit and it's like big fluffy cushions, compared. I "had" to have "that look" so I sold my 33x10.5 KM2's and got 33x12.5 KM2's. What Scott is referring to is good advice. My Jeep worked better overall with skinnys. I went through places that I never thought it would make with them and I could have avoided a lot of cost. Sorry to be offtopic but I had a few minutes so I thought I would let you know since you are asking about 33's. I hope this doesn't stir up a big debate... like Rust Check vs Crown... just my thoughts. ;D

All advise is good and I'm taking it all in.Run 33" 12.5's truxus on my XJ.This is wife's DD but want to wheel it mildly for now on some stock freindly/lightly challenging trails in spring. My initial thoughts are 2.5 lift and 31or32" tire to keep road manners and ride nice.Been looking at the JeepForum pics of LJ's(431pages )and the 33"s look just right on them so I'm up in the air right now? I want the Mickey Thompson MTZ but only come it 31" then 33" so ?

My father ha sa 33"x12.5" on the tailgate of his TJ, has only had it there for 6 months, and his tailgate is already getting bent, and he doesn't do any of the harder trails, and only drives it part-time.

If you wheel it or drive washboard - it's only a matter of time until it bends. 3 YJ's, 4 TJ's and 1 LJ of experience here - try and get a proper tire carrier someday. It's fine for a while... until....

Have 35 12.50 15 KM2 on tailgate. 0 issues thusfar Only a matter of time, My tailgate use to close mint. Now it's getting stiff. Same size tire. It's a pain in the ass but I only put it on for runs and take it off. My back is strong like ox, bend and twist.
