If I'm planning on Jamboree next year, I guess I need to get a CB. What do I look for? And are the portable ones any good? I would rather not mount one in my new Jeep.

Take a look at the small portable units that Midland and Cobra make. The are an all-in-one unit, where you basically get the entire CB in the handset. No permanent mods needed to the truck, easy to munt or remove and can work surprisingly well with a good mag-mount antenna like a Wilson.

Someone just told me about a portable one that you can buy at Irving. I think it was a Minden?

It feels like you're missing out on things without it That portable one of Sportsguy's looks sweet. Probably a much better price in the States than here too. My Midland is between $65-$90 +tax here, but only $30 @ Radio Shack in the US .

I have the Cobra 17ST portable and so far its pretty good. Got it for $50 on Kijiji and it came with a hand mic and 12v power cord. You can use and charge it with NiCad batteries (9) but you have to use a separate cord as the charge & power plugs are different sizes.
