In 97 they changed the body style to a more "rounded" look and the interior was upgraded. The drive train and engine are pretty much the same if not exactly with one exception that I know of. Sometime between 97 & 01 they went from cap & rotor to electronic ignition. .

There is also a computer switchover which has tripped a few up in the past. I thought it was 96/97 XJ's but I'm sure someone will chime in with a for sure answer. This one has caused a few people grief.

98 will be fine for the computer, it was the 96 that has the odd ball one. Check all the floors and rockers well, unless you don't mind welding in patches!

Ah gotcha! thanks gents! Yes, Floors and rockers are my main concern. If any of that looks seedy I'll report back and will be passing on it. Sheet metal is not my forte, unless you want holes welded into it.

Went to take a look, the rockers were solid but the floor not so much. The bottoms of the doors are getting a little soft. Not something I wanted to get into. Everything else looked good though! Has an oil pan leak but the front end was tight. Tcase linkage needs to be replaced. Hatch was mint, which surprised me. Has a bit of rust starting above the doors in that channel. A decent $800 dollar Jeep if you want to put the time into it.
