For some reason, I find it amusing that the fix for this is a having a free trailer hitch installed, lol. Makes sense I guess.

It would be funny to go buy a rotten ZJ and make them try to install a hitch on it. The dealer mechanics would be pissed, have to break out torches n shit, then just give up and slap a reject sticker on it to get it out of the shop.
Why no XJ recall? Its the same basic design.

Damn, if only I didn't have the hitch already. It really is more of a save face then actually doing anything imo.

But is it an official Chrysler hitch? If not, or if it doesn't look good they will replace it.

Damn, if only I didn't have the hitch already. It really is more of a save face then actually doing anything imo. You need an Offical hitch. Go in for the recall. Have a complimentary coffee, look at Rubicon JK's, CTD Rams, and Hemi Chargers. Exploding tanks isn't even an issue, they aren't saving face on anything besides an attack from the media, probably driven by some insidious forces wanting to kill their business. politics and evil corporations screwing around for market share. The percentage of accidents is tiny. i don't think the recall is based in safety at all, its an attack on the corporation. Pinto was a design flaw with high percentages, the comparision doesn't stand.

Well, legit or not, I felt it pertinent, as you guys are supposed to be "Jeepers" So far as witch hunting and so forth, hard to say. "Safety" (and yes, it's in quotes intentionally) has gone to a point where ANY organization that claims to be "Safety Oriented" wants to wrap the world in bubble wrap. Logic, sense, thought....none of these have much room in the eyes of these "Safety" organizations.
Regarding the Pinto comparison, it wasn't so much saying Jeeps are the new Pinto, BUMP-BOOM! as it was pointing out another poor fuel tank placement. With nothing to protect it, a fuel tank has a high chance of rupture upon impact. Flames would be dependent on open flame/good spark, so.....
Even IF they had a high tendency to burst into flame on impact, I'd take a Jeep over one of those little bubble cars (SMART, Yaris and others of that size) in a heartbeat. Somehow being enclosed in a capsule smaller than a frikkin' porta-potty doesn't appeal to me.

When my black ZJ got wrecked, the hitch got ripped in 2, the half with the receiver folded around into the tank, caving it in a lot. Tank didn't break or explode.

Installing a hitch makes so much sense if the fix would other wise mean engineering a whole new part. Don't forget they just got slapped with a huge fine for failing to report the "problem" John
