sum of you are already aware, I bought a 98 jeep zj off kijij from owners stating " cant be driven faster then 40 km/per....knowing jeep's history, I was hoping cheap fix...just a death wobble, check for play and throw some new parts at it, I bought it and called a tow truck. jeep was only 5 minutes from my house, so that was the main reason for me buying it "as is" as soon as the tow truck driver hooked onto it and started pulling up the flat deck, the passengers lower control arm moved and I got to see problem number one, rotten bracket... quick post on here and got word APJ's had one (thanks), took a long lunch break and headed straight there that day. replaced that night, backed it out of the garage and it locked up wheels...I was by myself so couldn't really tell what just happed in the drive way. im new to zj's, so I turn to the internet for knowledge... internet is slamming the np249 in the zj's, so I say...that's my next step. I locate a used np231 on here aswell (thanks) I get drive shaft shortened an 1" at local machine shop the next day. anyways, few stressful weeks of doing all my own repairs with limited tools, experience, space, time, and money....but I drove this muther f**ker to work today so im a happy boy

I thought I read somewhere that a ZJ Dana 30 has a longer pinion. But I can't say for sure.

I've had it happen to me, there is definetly a longer and shorter pinion in the mix there. I can't recall which vehicle gave me a problem. I think the ZJ gears had a long pinion and a different sized bearing on the pinion, particular to the gear-set. The D30 housings bores were same, but the snout was a bit longer.

No, no difference there. Hadn't checked on the TJ/ZJ gears seeing you had an axle.
