2002 TJ Sport 6cyl auto trans. While out wheelin in some shallow water got stuck. While trying to get unstuck tires dug down jeep lowered and water level went over trans breather and water got in trans. I've done a simple flush and also I have dropped the pan changed filter and fluid. Still having shifting problems. I plan to drop the pan again and change the filter and fluid again. Am I on the right path to getting it fixed or could there be more issues going on? What's the best recommended atf fluid? Also any additives I should use like lucas oil? Thanks for any help I appreciate it!

Drag race guys will pump a pail of fluid thru trans using the cooler lines. Draw from a clean pail, and dump into a dirty pail, till the clean pail is empty. (truck running up on blocks)
You can get pails at Walmart cheapest.
Best recommended fluid is the type listed in owners manual for that year.
There aren't any additives that will help water in trans. Needs to be flushed.

It's the shift solenoid. I did a combination of things after pulling the pan and valve body with no success....a couple of flushes, the reverse trick and another flush. To do the reverse trick, coast along about 30k and put in reverse in will build larger than normal pressure. Can't say if that is what cured it, but after that it has worked great since late last summer. I will be moving the vent before spring.

Oooo, sounds fun to put your rig in reverse doing 30. So that is a 'trick'? Its documented?

You obviously didn't grow up where I did lol, "reversals" were a big thing for fun long before any of us had any money to build power. We would do them much higher than 30k. The theory is it builds more than ordinary pressure which will move debris. MOst times that it will not shift up, there is debris in the shift solenoid. Now before you beat on me, I'm not saying that this is the ultimate answer anyway, as obviously there is still debris in the system. With any luck the new filter grabs that or you have a buddy like mine that rebuilds transmissions. Google gave me the idea, found it on Jeep Forum. As I already said, I can't say for sure if that one particular thing fixed it, but if it wasn't, it was a coincidence. I was desperate at the time as I didn't have time to pull the tranny for full rebuild.
Mine did NP. The 32 RH is an all hydraulic transmission so there is no reason that I know of it would not.

What does the parking pawl think of that? Maybe newer transmissions don't have one. I thought it was a pin that locks in or something. Anyway, interesting to hear about. I'm not trying it!

As a teen, a buddy had a 65 Comet with a 289. He threw it into reverse one day (not intentionally) as we were doing about 50mph, the driveshaft dropped out at the front end and we thought the car was going to pitch poll. No biggy, a couple of sore necks from heads hitting the roof, but we lived to tell about it.

See you need to stay in the throttle, hard, lol it'll fly around so quick you'll think it twisted your head off. We used to make an art out of doing it, then turning that into a big J hook. We ran nothing but junk in those days though. Buy a $3-400 beater, beat it till it died, then do it over again.
