That's fine, doesn't have to be mounted. You need to be able to listen to trail guides.

I've only been to one Jeep Jam and in my experience there were plenty of rigs without CBs. It's not a show stopper.
You can get ones with magnetic mounts for your hood that plug into the cigarette lighter if you don't want something permanent. A properly installed CB with a good antenna isn't all that great for range anyway, I don't know that a handheld would even be worth the money.

I used that same model at last years Jam. I got mine for $50 and it worked great for what it is. If your in the middle of the pack you can hear everyone, but if your on one of the ends then you don't get everything. Using an auxiliary antenna would help with the range. The fact that it's portable is a bonus too.

We should switch over to the hand held 2 way radios. Only around 30 bucks each when bought in pairs and usually have a 25+ km range. No wiring or antenna to worry about.

A CB radio is listed as a required item for Jamboree for a reason. If you saw "plenty" without them, then that is an unfortunate oversight from tech inspection. This year marks my 10th Jeep Jamboree, and a number of them were as/with a Trail Guide. A CB radio is a valuable thing to have to keep in communication with your trail guides and others on your trail, especially if there are a lot of vehicles on your trail and there is a holdup at the front.

I used a basic Midland at Jam last year but here is one that's kind of versatile. midlandusa.com/cb-radios/product/75-822cb-radio/As Brian mentioned, the small 2-way radios work well, and that's what some groups use. We, as a family, have used them for the past several years when at the cottage so the kids can report in when they're out on the lake or wandering the woods. They also worked well when we moved from Ontario and had 2 vehicles.

Yes yes, I understand why you need them but when the trail guides are asking if you have a CB each morning, that tells me more than a few didn't have them. I know the vechicles in front of me and behind me didn't have them, hence the reason I was placed between them. They spaced out the rigs with CBs among the ones without. Unfortunate oversight, maybe. More likely is that they're not sending people home that paid a couple hundred bucks for Jam tickets when a lack of CB isn't a huge hurtle to overcome.

I agree with Ken...FRS walkie talkies should be considered. That is what we use up here when we're wheeling. The nice thing is they have a clip on them and you can clip it to yourself so even when you are out of your rig you can keep in contact with the rest of the crew, especially handy when winching and the person who is taking care of the winch bitch duties outside can communicate with the drivers, ten times as safe and handy as a CB. Two FRS radios can be picked up for cheaper than one CB. Perfect clear transmissions using FM signals, no skip to worry about.

there pro and con for both CB and FRS the CB is in the jeep never left behind, always powered, the kids cant take it on you, not very portable, if you are that far from the driver when using a winch that you need a radio you have more than 150' of cable, the CB is listed as a requirement but it's not a show stopper, it's like being deaf you still see but can't hear so you rely on others. at the end of the day the CB is old tech and very reliable it aint broken why fix it. 4x4= channel 16 LOL
