So I got a good deal on a 98 Cherokee and not being able to pass up a good deal on a jeep I bought it. 98 Cherokee 4l auto. I bought it not running and determined after I got it home the fuel pump was bad. So I replaced that had pressure at the rail but then it stopped. I'm not getting any fire either. No power to the coil. I checked all the fuses and swapped some relays around and even changed out the cps but still nothing, any ideas? Thanks fellas

Could be the cam position sensor in the distributor. When it's bad you get no fuel or fire when cranking, same as a crank position sensor.

I may be mistaken, but if the coil is bad, it may not allow fuel either. pull the plug, use a test light and have someone crank it for you. only two wires, one should have power. if there is power, the coil may be bad.

There was no power going to the coil so my next thing idea was to check the cam sensor then if they doesn't work the computer maybe? The volt gauge isn't showing anything and neither is the fuel gauge when the key is in the on position if that means anything too?

No power = Wiggle the keys! Sometimes the switch in the steer column gets flakey.
Will the check engine light come on when key set to ignition? If computer is dead, that won't come on.

No check engine light on, the fuel light comes on and then turns off like normal. the oil pressure gauge goes from the rest position up to 0 but the fuel and volt gauge don't move.

Ground wire behind the engine , is it broke ? Did you check the ASD relay under the hood ? starting fuse under pass side kick panel ? Does it have a grey or black key ? remote start ? check for old alarm mounted under the dash near steering column ?

Kind of a quick diagnostic. I didn't mean 'is the check engine light on', i meant is the computer powering up?

Sorry Jan it does come on then turn off when I put the key to the on position. It's got a black key, I did switch around the relays, checked all the fuses, I'll have to double check the ground at the back of the motor, it does have auto start and I'll have to look for an old alarm system. Can only get so much tinkering done a day working nights on a shut at a nuke plant lol

Replaced it and then tried unplugging it for a while after that didn't work either.

Well today I got a hold of a computer out of an 01 Cherokee (not sure the differance between the two years) but neither had a security system. I now have fuel pressure, fire and the volt and fuel gauges are now working. If I give It gas while cranking it starts but runs real rough then spudders but at least the check engine light is on so I should be able to get a code off it tomorrow. At least it's a step in the right direction.

Oh shit really? Well it's unplugged now but I though I read somewhere that the year span was 98-01 or was it after 98 they went to a coil pack? So I need one from what 97 to 99 or something like that?
