I was talking to an old AMC Dealership owner and he was telling me about the days he used to sell the old Eagles and Jeeps. He told me something interesting, that in the 80's AMC classified the Eagle as a Jeep, and they put it in Jeep brochures as well as on the manuals for the vehicles. I thought it was hogwash, but after a bit of searching there seems to be validity to it. Link to a 1985 Jeep brochure, look on page 6 : www.oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA/Jeep/1985_Jeep/1985_Jeep_Brochure/dirindex.htmlApparently they were sold as the "Luxury" Jeep product, and were told to sell them as so. It had the same motor, 998 transmission which was in Jeeps (I think FSJ), Dana axles front and rear. From working on mine and transplanting a newer 4.0, all the bosses on the firewall are identical to at least 1995 XJ's. farm5.static.flickr.com/4108/5127809118_fee5b4d461.jpgwww.pacificnet.net/~sblake/84jeep1.jpgi.ebayimg.com/00/s/NDgwWDY0MA==/$(KGrHqZ,!nUE63Tf7ptUBO9L25CJGw~~60_35.JPG So I guess the Eagle is actually a Jeep, just their luxury crossover before they had a name for it. All their stuff from almost 1980 on is labelled Jeep Eagle. How interesting!

The early eagle had a full range case, but was banned just before production. The shifter was below the drivers seat. It's all flat as a pancake there.
