I discovered a leak yesterday, driver side front axle I read if it's leaking, I need to change inner and outer seals. My question is, is this a driveway repair, or should I have a shop do it? If a shop, what should I expect for a bill? Also - should I not drive it until it is fixed? Is it possible to run dry? Thanks, Dave

How bad is the leak? Use a bent straw or something to check your fluid levels. It can be done in your driveway but can get messy, and getting the new seals in can be a pain. Probably better off sending it to a garage and have them do it... the bucks you save may not be worth the work

There is only an inner seal from the factory , and you need to pull out your front diff to change them I doubt the leak is bad enough to say that you can not continue to drive it until you have time to have it fixed

I'm not sure if I should try that

No that's not the case , bearing caps need to go back on the same sides and direction as does the side carrier spacers

Them are made to keep water and mud out of you axle tubes. Not to keep the oil in And if you run them and your inter axle goes. You never know to you burn up your bearings and gears

First time installation... I'd buy at least one extra seal. Or at the least make sure they're in stock somewhere on the say you're doing them. It's a tight fit to get them into place without the proper tool to draw them in. Easy to mess them up.

Cool, thanks! I did a quick check last night after work, I pulled the fill plug and a little oil seeped out... Attachments:

those outer seals look like a good idea but they need grease, lots of it, and regularly, I had them and will never do it again, greased them every month till it ran out and still ruined the axle shafts
