My brand new Bilstein 5100's for the 05 wrangler LJ I'm lifting, these are sweet first time I splurged a little on shocks. They are going with Old Man Emu 3" coils and a 1"MM and 1"BL and 33" Trxus MT's.My question is I have never ran shocks with boots I always leave off.I do hit the odd water hole and mud is unavoidable on our trails here and I do like some mud too! What are you doing with your jeep shocks?Boots on or boots off?I like the look of boots off and they claim the seals will last longer? My jeep is black and the black boots look sexy with the aluminum shock.Give me your 2 cents on this Boot thing!

My understanding is that if the main shock body is in the up position, boots are not needed since mud and water won't gather at the seal. If the main body of the shock is in the downward position ,a boot is needed to keep mud and water from gathering at the seal. Made sense to me, so this is the rule of thumb that I always followed.

They came with boots installed when normally they are just in the box.I may leave on for warranty purposes to start?Still open to advise though from fellow jeepers keep them coming....

I think the Bilsteins are a good enough quality shock that even if the boots do hold some dirt, the seals will stay good. I've got boots on my Skyjackers and they are still good after several years.
