This fall my YJ developed an electrical problem. The Check Engine light came on and the voltmeter on the dash read about 12v. Immediately I suspected the alternator so I pulled it off and had it rebuilt. Today I reinstalled the alternator but when I started my Jeep the same symptoms are there. The Check Engine light came on and the voltmeter on the dash read about 12v. What else could be wrong? Does the engine computer on the YJ control the alternator? Maybe my wiring connections at the alternator are bad.

Have you used a meter to check the true voltage from the alternator? My volt meter in the dash always reads close to 17 volts, but actually only gets about 14.4

1990 and older 6 cyl have a self regulating delco alt. After that it's in the ECM.
You might have bad computer grounds, bad batt connections, bad batt or a bad ecm. Prob a rusty ground somewhere.
Should have tested system with voltmeter before buying parts.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll check those points today.
When the problem originally occurred I removed the alternator and had it tested. The shop confirmed it was bad and rebuilt it. That's why I was surprised when I dropped it in and it doesn't work. At least it appears it doesn't work.
I'll keep you updated.
