The gearbox for my snowblower has "Hayes-Dana 40" cast in the side of it (NOT "Dana Hayes" - sorry kilo69 ) I just installed new bearings and I need to shim the damn thing but I don't happen to have any shims. I was wondering if anyone out there in NSJC land may (and may know how to properly shim it?) In looking online it would appear people have these boxes shimmed regularly however there is no mention of where/what was used.

I've got lots of shims, but it's a long way for you to go. Is this for the carrier bearings?

I've got lots of shims, but it's a long way for you to go. Is this for the carrier bearings? It's for the two bearings on the shaft that go straight through - the pinion bearing seems to be ok so we didn't touch it. Do your shims match dimension wise? I was in to see a friend yesterday and everything he had was too big or too small (closest ones were 2.8" OD)
