When trying to take of the Wheel Nuts of my front passenger tire the aluminum cap on the nut peeled off. So I then put the tire iron on the nut itself and of course it rounded down two corners. I took it to the tire shack down the road from me and they said that the nut warped and they won't be able to turn it off. He suggested either torching it off or drilling out the stud for $150. The question I have are: 1. Has anyone had this happen to them? 2. What did you do? 3. How hard/difficult is it to drill the stud out and what is involved or needed to do this? I need to get this done as soon as possible because my front pads are close to a desperate need of replacement. TIA Chris

Also try welding a regular nut onto the old nut with the MIG. That's how I removed my fancy McGuard lug nuts that the PO lost the key for...

Depending on your rims, if there is room, you may be able to place your tire iron on the nut, and then reef on it up and down. As long as you have sufficent room between the lug and the rim, you should be able to snap the lug and stud off. Then its just a matter of pounding out the broken stud, and installing a new one.
I was able to do this on my old car as the nuts stuck out from the rim a bit.

18 mm might work but your best bet is prob the mig.The studs are very hard if not almost impossible to drill. When I had to do the same.I actually end up cutting the freaking wheel off in pieces.
Good Luck

Also, another way I heard, but can't really verify, is to leave the other 4 lugs very loose, and do some heavy s-turns in a parking lot. With luck, you will get a big clunk as that 1 stud breaks off. Can't verify this one though.

An air chisel will usually break them free too. When the stainless cover comes off the stock nuts, an 18mm fits, just so you know for next time. New lugnuts are cheap, do yourself a favor and replace them all now.

you can also buy a tool made to remove lug nuts at any auto parts store, or crappy. yyou just drive it on the nut, and as you start to turn it backwards, teeth bite into the lugnut so it will spin out. that would be way cheaper then 150 for someone to do the same

An air chisel will usually break them free too. I've had this happen on my tracker twice, as mentioned, an air chizzel will get them loose, then use vise grips. Wear gloves, and try not to slip! Dave

Hahahaaa - this is my "Trophy Keychain" all over again. Greg got mine off with an impact!!! MAN when they are broken and stripped they can be bastards to get off BUT NO, like Scott said NOT 150!! I bought a whole bunch of spares from Halifax Chysler for between 99-1.15 each (Solid ones NOT caps) sooo I am sure Dart Dodge has 'em too. Can Tire has them for quite a bit more!
