I think we are letting the collective goodwill engendered by the SWAT initiative get out of hand here folks. It is one thing for the Club to get on the go and help on the rare occasion that we have a major storm to help transport medical personnel and supplies and all that, but now we are getting into animals and people that have lost thier vehicles to thieves. I feel as bad as the next guy that he lost his vehicle, but that is life.
Please keep in mind that we have signed up to do a service that I see as having a major value to the community, rare though it may be that we have the opportunity to do so. We are NOT... I REPEAT... NOT a self-help organization, nor are we the Salvation Army, Goodwill, Santa Claus, or missionaries to the lost, downtrodden, or otherwise disenfranchised, no matter what they drive.
Let's keep the focus here people and concentrate on doing what we signed up to do and less on the fuzzy feelings we all seem to be having because we are about to do something nice for the community this winter.

We should also keep in mind that any Nurses, Doctors etc.. who cannot make it to work due to bad weather also are given Taxi's to and from the Hospitals at no charge - I see our involvement in Extreme weather - i.e. white juan or similar events

We should also keep in mind that any Nurses, Doctors etc.. who cannot make it to work due to bad weather also are given Taxi's to and from the Hospitals at no charge - I see our involvement in Extreme weather - i.e. white juan or similar events I'll add some clarity to this point. The CDHA is responsible for their staff from the time the employee doorway steps outside their own doorway, until they return. That's the liability they have as an employer. Since each staff member is deemed essential, the CDHA would much rather us be doing the fetching of staff than sending taxi's. The biggest disconnect the CDHA has right now is this: Sure, many of the main roads get plowed during storms, but most of the staff live in places OFF the main roads. The options are - send a taxi, which may or may not make it through the main roads (depending on the severity of the storm, and the plowing), or call on us to help. The biggest reason to reply on us is this - we can get to the persons home. The taxi will end up meeting them at the bottom of a street, then the employee must trudge through the snow to reach the taxi. Since the CDHA cares about it's employees and is responsible for thier safety, they are more likely to ask for our help during a big storm than try taxi's first. Len, as for us losing focus, I think you need to, with all due respect, chill out. The rein's on this don't need yanking, no one is off doing weird things. What's your collectively bundling into a "concern" is simply statements people have made to express thoughts and opinions. This whole thing is new, so I'm sure there will be another 12 angles folks will suggest the SWAT team try to help with that simply won't be the kind of thing the SWAT team would do. I agree - the #1 focus right now will be the storm-related call-outs for hospitals and such. That's the starting point...and until that actually happens and we reach the starting point, we're stil staring at the track...and everyone will have thoughts on what we can do to help. On a related note - once we as a club agree to become more community minded and helpful, I see it as natural folks wold want to help in one-off-rare-circumstances like the stolen Jeep one. heck, i considered it strictly because the PR value alone would be priceless! (But that's always near the top of my mind...hehe) Anyway, not trying to get up in yor face bro. I just think maybe you came on a little strong on this one when the focus hasn't changed for SWAT...folks are just expressing thoughts, that's all I saw. I'm editing this to add a wee bit more clarity: We will be receiving call-outs from the CDHA only when their emergency plan comes into effect. It's not like they'll be call on us if we're getting 10 cms of snow and they can't get a taxi for 45 minutes. We're strictly back-up during 'events" as they call them - major storms that shuts down public transit and generally results in closures and cancellations - that kind of weather. Just wanted to make sure i included a bit more definition of when we'd be called on.

Not that I am big in favour, but! Could you just imagine the p-r had we offered to help a lone handicap man who owns a JEEP...I'm sure by offering him our help it would reach the television news as this story already has...

Too late, Canadian Tire in Clayton Park has offered to fix the Jeep and cover most of the costs, they are also paying his towing charge. Looks good on them.
