Hello fellow jeepers .. i currently own 3 jeeps..2 cherokess and a grand cherokee ltd that i recently purchased. The question refers to the Grand cherokee. I bought it in august of this year and shortly after purchasing it i noticed that when i would come to a stop there would be a sound in the rear end(this is at a complete stop not in the stopping process) that sounded sort of like brakes releasing or something letting go and the truck would shift forward. Also after i come to a complete stop and park it and shut it off this same thing will happen and you can see the truck actually move forward..first thing i thought of was that the e-brake was too tight...this is not the case the e-brake seems to be working perfectly...
The other issue is the same night i purchased it and got it home i put it in 4-lo to try it and then took it out...it disengaged fine but the lo light would not go off for several minutes ... ever since that night the computer keeps telling me to have the 4wd switch serviced..but the 4wd seems to work perfectly as well .. by the way this is the all time 4wd package in this cherokee ... any insight to these issues is greatly appreaciated

Not sure about the first problem, but the second, sounds like you need to replace you 4wd switch... just as the console is telling you. The switch won't have any effect on what mode you're in, it's just a position switch. It tells the VIC what mode the t-case is in.
Go to the dealer, buy the switch and replace it on your tcase. It's not a big deal... just unplug the harness, and using a big socket (I think there is clearance) or wrench, unscrew the switch.

I have the symptoms of the firsto one u described in my YJ. But it all relates to my lower shock bushings being shot! I dont know if thats what may be causing your problem but i replaced mine once already and it went away till they got beat out again!
Just a thought! Justin

I'm with Bill on the switch.Shake the 4wd shifted. My XJ used to do the same thing.Wiggle it. (connection bad??) I "think" that I had the same problem brake wise in my '96 LTD. I had the rear brakes serviced. Noise is gone. My experience/my fix.

ok forgive me for being stupid ... is the switch connected right under the shifter or is it on top of the transfer case?

you reach it by getting under the jeep... look for the wires coming out of the transfercase. It's a large hex unit.
Easiest way is to buy a new unit, and look for the matching unit on your t-case.

With reference to the first issue. The bushings in the rear leafs could be bad (if its a ZJ, a WJ I am not sure). When you come to a stop the car obviously shifts forward (duhh right ). If the bushings are bad they will hitch up and stick and it will take a few seconds for it to shift back to the normal position. Happened all the time to my XJ until I put in the lift. Not sure if this is the problem you are having but a possible one to check for.
