The CB is less important than a good antenna. Big 6 (woodward industries) can help you out with this.
All CB's are regulated to a max watt output, so the transmission/reception is all in the antenna and placement.
Just by a CB based on price, and features... I think all cb's these days are 40 channel, so features will include, PA output, ext. speaker output, weather station... etc.

You got it Bill, most of the cheaper(non side band) CBs all offer about the same for bells & whistles. PA, External Speaker & Weather Channel capabilities are a few.
Myself I run a Uniden 520XL and it works well.
As for antenna's. Most of the ones I've sold are the Wilson Superflex. They are near impossible to break(no reports as of yet, but like the titantic, anything is possible).

Get the sucka tuned right!! Fancy means nothing if the system is out of wack. I've had great luck in some cases and they were bang on, right out of the box.
If you want to save some money get a cheaper CB, but a good ant. and have it mounted properly. Then get Big 6 to tune it for you. Kevin is a straight up guy who will never try to over sell you. If I was just starting out, I'd just ask Kevin what I needed and give him a Visa number.
No, other than the Jeep club he's not a close friend etc. He's just a plane old honest guy, who gets my full support.

Kevin has taken care of my CB needs with little fuss and is always there to answer a question, lend a hand or make sure everything is running OK. Very true that tunning a CB/antenna combo makes a world of difference (Mike W. - you reading this...? LOL perhaps you need the SWR on your laptop tuned, too...? LOL). There are other ways and places to buy this equipment, but Kevin is straight up one of the best I've ever dealt with. PLUS, if things go to crap, he's handy...and then you can just wrap your fingers around his neck...LOL J/K His things rarely go to crap...and he's too quick to grab hold of...LOL

B6 is the man when it comes to CB stuff. I just got a new CB from him and his after sale service is excellent. Personally I have never spent any time with him, don't really know the guy, but there you go.

I had a question about this as well: so, would it be correct to say that most folks are using just the 40 channel models on the trails and sideband radios aren't necessary?

This is true for 2 reasons. There is no real reason to use sideband as the people we usually chat with are either right in front or behind us. As well in order to keep our costs down, and for space sake.
