pic of the whole truck i'll get in a minute. as for welding cast, you need something with a high nickle content, i used stainless..... and awe....... a 1985 sj413....... the first year they were offically called the samurai........ only year with 3:90 R&P's, good to find when running say 30s or 31"s on a 86 or newer model.......... i'll also dig up a pic of my old samurai, the last rig i had before this sidekick...... worst thing i did was sell that, but now i got something even better so not all that bad that i sold it....

90 kick, 1.6L efi, auto, dual cases, 3 link coil rear, cj7 rear springs in front, toy axles, 4.10's, welded rear, soon to be front too, x-over soon to be hydro assist, with 33" tsl's. and now the old sammy........ 1988, 1.3, 5spd, 3:1 case, 5.13 R&P's, welded rear, yj leaf springs, SOA, 33" mud kings. pic is from the "Play Pen" trail at the 2003 rockathon.

The steering knuckles are likely of cast steel not cast iron. This makes them much easier to weld and the nickle rod is not so important due to the much lower carbon content of cast steel.

yes john your right, they are not cash iron..... just casted......... but stainless does work better than a regular mild steel.

I doubt it is cast steel, that process is extremely rare. More than likely forged steel, like front axleshafts.
Either way anyone who can weld, can weld steel!

I made a Y shaped arm like that on my 92 SAS. i would suggest you Gusset inbetween the two arms. I didn't' at first and had it fail. After putting the Gusset in, jumps, crashes... were all childs play! haha
Looks good tho!
Makes me start thinking about how i could do the same to my new truck (96 Tacoma).

It is Cast Steel. i had a highly experienced welder evaluate them and suggest the best method of welding.
He suggested 7014 rods. Thats what i used.. with a lincon 225 set to the highest amperage. and be careful to get all the slag out if your using a stick welder
oh yeah.. it "should" be pre heated and post heated to reduce the internal stresses. Almost as good would be to just not quench it, and let it cool to room temp on its own.
Anyone know where to get a D44 out of a Wagoneer? i would need one to swap under the Tacoma.

i used stainless rods and let it cool on its own....... either way it'll be more than strong enough for my use, i'll have a hydro ram on the tie rod so there won't be any force on the drag link arm.....

hey man that looks good but a tri gusset would be etra beef ;D. i'm in the process of a 84 toy axle swap on my 91 toy pick up and the price of a hysteer kit is scarry 650 from big counrty customs. so what kind of arms did you use? the stock toyota ones?

that arm ain't going anywhere as is, trust me....... and its 2 stock passengerside arms grinded flat, and welded together and then bolted though both arms into the knuckle..... you'll need 2.5" 8.8MM bolts..... it think it was 2.5".... maybe 2", just measure before you buy bolts.... but they are 8.8MM

The bolts are 12mm x 1.5 mine are 50mm long. The 8.8 is a tensil strenth, similar to a grade 5 standard bolt. A 10.9 would be better but all I could find was 8.8's. For those looking for them in HRM first place I found that had them was Trans world Automotive on Waddel, off of Windmill on left before you go under the bridge.

Well to anyone who doesn't want to weld thiers together I would suggest to rethink. I had mine torqued down and still managed to snap off the front two bolts. Truck hasn't even been on a full run yet just some testing in the neighborhood. Welded and tiangulated now, it is going to be run on the street so the stronger the better.
