doin 4.56's in Ken's TJ D44........ the front was easy. the rear d44 he got a locrite and a new carrier, so we had no baseline for carrier shims. we needed to be able to get the bearings off a few times (uhh....make that 7 times) b4 the perfect pattern. i milled the new carrier to be able to get a gear puller's fingers in the tight little slot. but the puller just kept exploding from the super tight press fit. the bearings went on really hard the first time. so that didn't work. checked this out - figured i could make one. www.pirate4x4.com/articles/tech/billavista/PR-ARB/articles/Randys_Carrier_Bearing_Puller_Review

the jackscrew the thick washer takes the force of the pull. the screw turns easily on the delron super dense plastic. the bottom of the plastic sits on the carrier bearing journal. the clam clamper

Sweet!!
couldn't you use pair of set-up bearings - bearings ground down to make them a little easier to install and remove and then put in the new ones once the shims are figured out??

race on, plastic spacer to preload bearing against jackscrew/clam grabber. the clam halves are to the left on the table. the ring on the jackscrew will pull up on the clam, as it tightens on the carrier all set-up for the pull in the vice, 1/2 off check out the fit of the clam on the bottom of the bearing - perfect. i did that with a plasma!! yup, so did that 7 times and the bearings are untouched. thx Billavista! for the idea.
