when you buy a crate engine that's all you get - just the engine - no carb or fuel inj., no brackets for anything, no wiring, no alt., no starter, power steering, etc...

There are all kinds of crate engines; short, and long block as well as "turn key" that have all the brackets and accessories the engine needs.

hmmm, what does a 572 cost?? We had a Mopar catalogue at the shop last year (probably still around), that had all their performance engines and part numbers. So for a few giggles we called up and asked them to check a few part numbers. One was $20,000 the other was over $60,000.

I would asume that it's cheaper to build your own, but did you look into it is all I'm asking.

And where would you suggest buying a new 360? You're not confusing an AMC 360 with a Dodge 5.9 are you?

I'd take the 360 out of my AMX and put it in a crate for $20,000. Tomorrow soon enough! ;D My 390 could then have the best of everything and I'd still have money left over.

Chev makes a lot of different crate engines for 4 and 5 grand, just bolt a carb on and go, with a 90 day warranty. You can get a 350 horse engine for around 5000, last time I checked which was a few years ago. You just need to shop around, lots of aftermarket companies that are cheaper than the factory too. I put enough money into mine to buy a 350 ram jet full injected engine, reliable power, and with a warranty. If I have to do it again, it will be a crate engine.

best deal i could find in the mopar performance catalouge is a 360 drop in that retails for $7820.00 but would sell for $6500.00. makes 390hp @ 5400rpm & 420ft lbs @ 4400rpm.

Sounds like a challenge to me. Well as far as cost goes the rebuild of the AMC 360 was the cheapest option. Parts for just above cost, machine work at a discounted rate and free labor for assembly. I still figure I have 4-5k into the engine. Now what do I have? A 350 horse, 400 ft/lb fuel injected motor that bolts up to everything I have in the Jeep. No adapters, no special motor mounts, no driveshaft/rad issues etc, etc. And it is a AMC/Jeep engine. I suppose I could have gotten a crate 350, probably a short block in the same price range. But, I'd still need the front end (alternator, water pump, starter, bracketery, etc), a carb. I'd have to swap in a different tranny/t-case combo or go with adapters ($$$), make a new crossmember, driveshafts, motor mounts betc, etc. Could have swapped in a 5.2/5.9 out of a ZJ. But then I need to find a smashed up grand and buy the entire thing. Still modify a bunch of drivetrain parts/mounts, crossmembers etc. front driveshaft would be on the wrong side etc, etc. I'd have to buy a new computer to get it to run (to get around the security system), and getting guages to work would be a hassle (ZJ body computer controls guages). And it still wouldn't be a fresh engine. Now I could have built the engine cheaper. Could have gotten a cheaper cam, could reused my valve springs and timing chain, could reused the stock intake manifold and got a carb for it, didn't have to do a 3 angle valve job, could have used cheaper wires. There are a lot of ways to cut corners to save money, but why do it. If your gonna do it, do it right and build it to last. ;D
