Well here's the start of it. It's going to be a slow build, but keep tuned... should be fun. Ok, so the plan is to use the box, frame and rear end. I'll paint it to match the Jeep, and put on a cap and paint it to match my tops. I'll use spacers under the leaves to get enough lift to run some 33s. The trailer's intended purpose is to haul the odd sheet of plywood, and also so that we can throw an air matress and use it for camping.

Can you do a MSpaint to help me visualize ;D
On a serious note though... won't all that extra weight cut into the small towing capacity of the rubicon?

I'm more worried about high speed wind drag then weight.

I say try it, but my utility trailer weighs less than half of that, and with a 650 +/- pound 4 wheeler it's all I'd tow with a TJ. You certainly know it's on there. If you have ABS it will be better, otherwise it will shove you where it wants to go. TJ's don't resemble longer wheelbase trucks when towing.

Yup, I'll try it and use it before paint and tires. If it's too bulky then I'll sell it and try again with a 1/4 tonne. When I have a load on it will be from the building depot to my house... all back roads. And when its on the highway, it's going to have sleeping bags and an air mattress. I might put a surge brake on, and I will be removing the gears to lighten things up a little. Any guess as to how much 1/2 a truck weighs? ;D

i welded a crossmember in a friends back half of a trailer about a month ago, and he had a ranger box...short box but he had knocked a few inches outta the front of it, making it a bit shorter.

she's pretty large! will that be wider than your jeep?
i think you'll be ok on the weight doing what you described.

I should say that most of my towing is in the winter, slippery roads and an icy 3-4 mile cabin road full of hills. I tow a boat in the summer and it isn't too bad. Compared to the ext cab Ranger 4x4 I had it does suck though. A run to the depot won't be too bad, leave a little extra room between you and the next vehicle.

Just had an idea! Keep the truck!! I miss my truck, as small as it was, but would love to have a beater like that. You probably miss yours too.

Yah, it would be nice to have a truck again, and some day I hope to have one as my DD and tow the Jeep behind, but 1/2 the point of this project is to have something for "Jam like" events so I don't have to set up a tent and sleep on the ground. I do hope it doesn't look too goofy behind the Jeep but that remains to be seen!

Well, the Jeep is 5ft wide, and the truck box is 6'2" Now that's not including the flares on the Jeep... so it might not look too bad.
I've wanted to do this for a while, and it's just as much a learning project then anything else. Once the general trailer is made I'll be taking the box off, sanding, painting the frame, and then the box... and possibly cap. Like I said, if it doesn't turn out like I thought I should be able to sell it and recoup my investment.

I wonder if there is a way you can use the brakes on the rear axle to help?

the rear axle of most older front wheel drive cars make good utility trailers
