I wonder if there is a way you can use the brakes on the rear axle to help? That's what a surge brake does. Basically there's a brake pedal in the front of the trailer tongue, so when the jeep brakes, the trailer pushes on it and activates it's brakes. The harder the Jeep brakes, the harder the trailer brakes.

There is a spring inside them, so most times when you back up the brakes don't come on, and usually they have a lockout pin too. U-haul ones don't, but a V-8 Dakota in 4x4 will still push them backwards up a hill.

Surge brake at PA is $220... I guess I'll try it without and get one if I absolutely need to. ;D

You would be better off building one exactly the way you want it with thin wall tubing. Then sprayfoam the inside. Keeps moisture out and created strength to the tubing. That is what I did for a trailer and I could roll the trailer around with two bobcat loads of mulch around by myself. I used an axle from a CRX. Simple tralier but worked great. Loaded it up with camping gear in platic tubs and away we went. Was a little bouncy with nothing in it. But it was never usually empty.

i'd be interested in the gears if price is right and there for sale unless their spoken for. that should have an 8.8 in it and i need spider gears and pin for a truck i have . i would like to have the whole carrier but don't need the ring and pinion if someone wanted it ?

you'll need that stuff to hold your axles in, dude. i don't think 8.8's are c-clip, but you'll need side gears/spiders/pin and a carrier. you can sell r&p. i re-read this thread. you could be doing this wayyyy lighter. i know you are limited with the lack of metal fab gear, but a 1/4 ton truck bed would help some. some plywood, or camping gear is what you said? even a little jacked up 4x8 utility trailer you could sleep in cozy. you're not THAT tall. have flip down sides if it's too narrow.

Like I said; I'll see how it works and looks then see if I'll keep it or sell it and go the 1/4 ton route. For some reason I kept thinking that I wouldn't be able to haul a sheet of plywood in a 1/4 ton bed... but oh well. Live and learn. It will be used as a hard shell camper more then anything. I plan on making, or having made a some canvas conecting the cap hatch and tailgate when they're open with a zipper door. Like you'd see on the front of a tent. So, all I'd have to do is park, open, and we're camping! I bet you've never met someone willing to work so hard to make something just a little easyer. ;D
