I was hoping someone from the Cape Breton club (or anyone who knows the answer) could answer a question for me about the highlands area.
I see tons of what appear to be old logging roads in the interior of the island and I was wondering if there is a way to get from the east coast of the island to the west coast of the island...not using the Cabot Trail! Are they open roads, are they fun roads. I was think of going from somewhere like Wreck Cove to Cheticamp and althought it looks possible from Goggle Earth, I have no idea what is really there...gates, bridges etc etc...
So, I was wondering if it can actually be done..if so, maybe you could share some real world experiences or some advice.
Cheers, Chris

Wreck Cove hydro is gated. You could ask Keith who is the Supervisor there but I doubt they'll let you in with the snow and/or roads soft.

I was just planning ahead, something in the summer would be more fun. Are the roads open in the summer ?

The logging road, trails etc are like sprider webs all over the island. I wouldn't advise heading in unless you have a recent topo map, GPS coordinates or a guide. I got lost last summer on trails that I pretty well lived on as a kid with my 3Wheeler . Road changes due to logging, floods and other Mother Nature influence confuse you sometimes ;D

Yes, looking at Google Earth \ Google Maps I see the spider webs....very scary indeed !! I would get lots of maps, lots of GPS's and lots of gas before I tackled such a trip. I was just wondering if I would even be allowed on those roads. Are the roads fair game or does one need special permissions? Would this be something anyone else would be interested in ?
Cheers, Chris

You can access the highland trails through the Oregon Rd, via the snowmobile trails, if you are familiar with St. Anns Bay at all it is just passed North River, there is an old school house on the Oregan that is now a gift shop.
If not familiar with the area pm me and I will send better instructions, I am very familiar with that area of the island, my family had a cottage in Tarbot until about 2yrs ago, as well as family and friends that live who I could also get info from, hell they'd probably even meet up with ya and show ya the way.
As far as I've been told there is a spot in Wreck Cove that will get you to the Highlands as well and it's not through the Hydro station, although not sure where for sure, when we have gone to the highlands we go in from the Oregon Rd., I have yet to get down there and take the Jeep up to the highlands, we have gone up in trucks with no problems, and I know the Jeeps can do it for sure as well. Need any more info let me know. This summer I will definetly be hitting the highlands in the Jeep.
But a word of caution, when you go beware that the Native Americans are allowed to hunt year round and they do alot of that hunting through this area for moose and they are out hunting there in the summer...so just be careful...also if its summer when ya go there are farmers that let there highland cattle roam freely up in the highlands so you may see some long-haired cows roaming around... But it is definetly a beautiful spot to do some wheelin... Alicia

Excellent, thanks for all the info....this sound like an awesome excuse for a roadtrip.
Maybe we can get interest from a few clubs and make this an unoffical multi-club event. And if that fails, maybe just a weekend with a few curious minded Jeepers !!!

No Robin's/ cigar shops in St. Anne's - tough sell for me...some IJW will be on board for this proposed run. A 14 hour last summer started in Middle River and went for...well 14 hours...
